I was wondering that myself, where is it on the RTS-SE6 Models?
I have a 2014 RTS-SE6

;) I don't think so...
I'm discussing a potential source of the problem. If you keep getting DESS errors time and time again; perhaps it's not the DESS module...
Just exploring other parts of the system. :D
:D That's quite all right...
It's not as if I've NEVER gone off-topic before! :D
Just happened to me today. DESS code.
I guess it is my turn. was out on a short ride today and after about 45 miles I pulled over to make a phone call. upon restart I got the DESS code.
I have read about this on the Forum so I did not panic but started running options through my mind on what to do. BTW, it is a '14 RT S SE6 with 4100 miles, I tried about 3 times to do a restart and had no luck. I then turned the switch on and off about 3 or 4 times without trying to start it, The DESS code went away and the Engine code appeared (the little orange picture of an engine), the spyder then started up like nothing was wrong. I suppose the electronics finally hooked up as I was turning the switch on and off. Anyway, rode on home after making another stop at the store for the wife and expecting it to happen again I was pleased when it started up without a problem.
Guess I'll call the dealer.
As I stated in another post on Saturday, my 2014 RTS decided give me the DESS error when I tried to start it. After many attempts to start it and 2.5 hours later, she started. Now, I was out with the wife today in her car. We were stopped in a line of cars in a construction zone. There were 7 Harleys, mostly trikes, behind us. Since it appeared to be a long stop everyone shut down their engines. 20 minutes later traffic began to move again, so everyone started their engines, including the Harleys. I thought for a moment, what would have happened if I would have been on my Spyder and when I tried to start it in this traffic, I would have gotten the dreaded DESS!! There were no shoulder on the roadway due to the construction. I would have been right there like a huge paper weight, holding up traffic. Would not have been a pretty scene!! Also would have given anyone witnessing the problem a negative opinion of the Spyder product! Come on BRP, get your act together and get this problem fixed, please!!!!
Ditto! Mine has popped up several times in the last two weeks, starting to happen more often. It will quit on me sooner or later as this pattern is much like it did before earlier this year, after which, the DESS module was changed. New ignition and keys last year, new module this year. Taking it to dealer tomorrow to see what they can do.
Other than this, this machine has been darn near flawless and I love it.
Latest UPDATE on my D.E.S.S Key code issue - as of 8/18/2015
Here is the latest update with my D.E.S.S. KEY Code issue (see date in the title bar) I was asked 2 questions from (via my personal email address)
1. Do you know if the customer (me) has her Spyder key attached to any other keys? I said "no I have the Spyder keys on a separate key chain."
2. Does the customer carry both keys together? I said yes, I do carry both keys together.
The above 2 questions were from a BRP Tech ( no name was given). They also said "We have had cases where a cell phone or magnetic card placed near the ignition switch causes this. This includes any device that may emit some type of frequency."
Now, this is what my can-am dealership said to me (on the phone this afternoon) If it happens again "Turn off/on immediately DO NOT LET THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN, do the "Turn off/on for 4 to 5 cycles, and call." The above info was given to me from my dealership. Also, my can-am dealership has opened up a Case with BRP. Deanna
***** Stay tuned to this Thread*****
According to the parts manuals, the 2015's have a different ECM and a different DESS Module. Since the DESS must communicate with the ECM to start the bike, my guess is that the 2015 DESS will communicate only with a 2015 ECM. The 2015 DESS number (710004241) is different than both the original 2014 part number and the updated 2014 part number. So they did make changes that are more than skin deep. Just not the kind of changes you'd put in your advertising literature. :roflblack:
Did you read my newest update on this thread?
Yes, the 2015 DESS number is 710004241 - it is different from the original 2014 part number.
I did post on this thread the new parts numbers for the 2014 RS, ST, RT ...... 710004190 2015 RS, ST, RT ...... 710004141 2015 F3 ........ 710004697 just in case you missed. Deanna
Deanna, thanks for the input! This is interesting. I also have no other keys on my Spyder key chain. I never have my two Spyder keys together either. I have one key, my wife has the other one. We do this for safety in case I lock my key in the Spyder by accident. Now for the other info, this past Saturday when my Spyder gave me the DESS for 2.5 hours, I had my phone on with Blue Tooth turned on, and my Sena headset on with Blue tooth attached to my phone. I don't know if that any impact on my problem or not. But after 2.5 hours, when the Spyder did start I didn't have my helmet with me at the bike, nor turned on. Just the phone. Interesting twist!!
I keep my phone and credit cards nowhere near the ignition switch. When I had my DESS error I wasn't even on the bike yet; I had turned the key on to let it boot up while I put my helmet and gloves on.
I don't keep both keys together but I do keep it on a short keyring along with the saddlebag key, LidLox key, and house keys.
On the POSSIBLE electrical or OTHER KEY interference thing.................... I have gotten the DESS message (@ 13,200 mi ) But I don't even own a CELL phone and I only carry ONE KEY................ :lecturef_smilie: :gaah: So much for that Theory!!!!! .... Mike  ........... This is starting to sound Familiar - remember when BRP kept saying ....What heat issues, we ain't got no stink'in HEAT issues (ref.2013 RT) :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack:
My Spydee goes in the Shop Friday for the 3,000 service. And, they will be looking into the D.E.S.S error as well. I only get the error with one of my keys and not every time I use that key. So, I'm adding more mystery to this.

Has anyone reported the D.E.S.S. error on models earlier than 2014?
We might have seen a couple, but they were pretty rare...
