First, I want to apologize b/c I only know how to copy and paste; but, I don't know how to get the actual picture to come up. This is just my physical therapist sense of humor. Over the years I've read a lot of aches and pains on here. Utah, if you read this, continue past your P.T. sessions as I said in a P.M. I'll probably never see or hear about your end result. Okay, I'm out of here.

I don't understand what you're asking, cos, at least where I come from, have ever been, and currently live, we certainly DO have a Christmas' Eve, and a Christmas Day....

We have always celebrated a Christmas Eve. Special food, maybe a present or two. Always watch the 1939 version of A Christmas Carol...Reginald Owen. The more recent versions are better, and in color, but more drawn out.

My observations is that Christmas Eve is usually expressed as singular while New Year's Eve is expressed as plural. Just something I pondered on New Year'S Eve while having a libation or two with nothing else to do.....

And now that it is New Year'S Day, the same question could be asked. Why is Christmas Day singular (Not Christmases or Christmas's Day) and New Year'S day plural (Not New Year Day)

Ahh! Now I see what you were asking....

But the 's in 'New Year's Eve' isn't actually denoting that it's a plural, it's a 'possessive 's', so it's really just saying that 'the Eve' being referred to is the eve belonging to the 'New Year' ie. it's referring to the Eve of the New Year - just like Christmas' Eve should really have a possessive ' after the ...s (but with no additional s after the apostrophe, as in Christmas's, cos the word Christmas already ends in an s ) so just as I've outlined regarding New Year's Eve above, Christmas' Eve is actually referring to the Eve of Christmas And the same goes for both Christmas' Day & New Year's Day - they are referring to 'the day of ...'

Many don't understand this, which is why some say "New Years" or "Christmas" when they're actually referring to "the New Year" or "Christmas Time/Day/Eve", altho others may quite properly refer to "New Years" or "Christmas" intentionally but without actually verbalising the following "Eve" or "Day" because they assume that'll be understood.... but so often that isn't understood... and you know what 'assuming' does, don't you??

So actually, both Christmas' Eve AND New Year's Eve are singular, albeit properly expressed with possessive apostrophes, but both often don't get the appropriate possessive apostrophes simply cos people get lazy.... or editors/writers didn't want to 'waste' that space in their headline or text; and/or the person/s concerned either don't know or no longer bother to follow the Rules of Proper English Usage, which admittedly are often pretty odd & sometimes quite confusing!!

    So that's all clear now??

Thank You, Peter. I had forgotten about the possessive apostrophe. Hoping you and all had a good Christmas' Eve, a Merry Christmas Day, a Happy New Year's Eve, and a great New Year's Day. Now my head hurts from thinking and I know just what to add to my tonic to make it all better. ..... Jim

Christmas is singular and the celebration of it is for the anniversary, not multiples of Christmas.

Each January first is a new year, so it is plural.

    Am I confused yet?

And you think YOUR head hurts after that little lot!?! I'd join you in that drink, only I'm on a permanent & strictly enforced on literal pain of death medical stoppage of any/all tonic additives &/or other beverages that might make things feel better... That might be why you see so many of these things in my posts - they don't necessarily stop the pain, but some days it just feels 'better' when I stop!

Season's Greetings & Best Wishes to you & yours too, and to all in the broader Forum Community as well!
