Default Anyone done a DIY Shifting/Brake Rod Adjustment?

Anyone take an existing brake level rod and cut it in half, thread both ends then use a double ended female coupler to join then? $130 for a Sling mod version. Only asking because of the used F3 I bought is at position 5 and it's way too long for me to ride comfortably so I need to get either static ones from dealer ship or the adjustable one from Slingmod. BTW, I need one for the brake and shift lever.

If I get static I'll be in the same boat if I want to change the position.

Hope this helps. I modified the brake rod only. I was able to set the shifter rod to my liking using the OEM adjuster, # 4 in my case.
