• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

    GPS mount, revisited

I don't have one on hand to work with, but I don't expect it'd be awfully difficult. BRP sells one, and they have two different part numbers. I'll look into it. Anyway I went out this morning intending to finish the other two mounts. First thing I did was get the parts I made the other day...

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

My bag arrived, and didn't even kind of fit. I built the rack expecting a trunk mount like this: Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr Blue tape under to show where the holes match up with the rack. Unfortunately the Shad mount looks like this: Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr Only a few...

    GPS mount, revisited

If you tried hard enough, you could make this with a drillpress, a file and a hacksaw. Don’t let the fact that I have fancy (albeit 75 year old) tools deter you from making your own.

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

So I hated the way it looked. The only thing I hate more than painting (or drywall) is stripping paint. I stripped it down to bare metal, hit it with bondo, cleaned up all the parts, etc. and repainted it. Looks very slightly better now. A girlfriend of mine calls me a perfectionist. I...

    GPS mount, revisited

So a buddy of mine with a spyder bought a GPS like mine and had beer, so I made him a mount for him like I made for mine. This time I figured if I was making one, it would be just as easy to make three. So first I started with a CAD rendering. Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr Then I...

Same hardware 129 windshield vs Blue Ridge

Yes, yes by god it is. I'm only saying that because just saying 'yes' is, apparently, too short to post.

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

So I figured I'd make the latches. First I started out by laying them out in CAD. Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr I made a quick jig of 1/4" steel tapped to 1/4-20 with a stack of washers on the back side to mill the stainless mount bolts to length. Then I made another jig to hold them in...

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

Thanks! Best way to learn something is to do it. I taught myself welding from books before youtube, and if I can do it anyone can. Best thing about metal is that if you don't like it, cut it up and do it again. I've gone through a lot of revisions, modifications, and redo's on this already...

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

So I'm still bored, and I still have metal. I added the rack part to it. Same 1/4"x1.5" steel, cut to some random angle that looked nice, then beveled on the bottom and welded. Then I ground out the top and welded from the top as well. No kill like overkill, I grabbed some 1/8" plate and...

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

Welded together Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr Checking for center and straightness Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr And because there's no kill like overkill, and you never know when you'll need to use the rack mount to carry the bike from a helicopter, I added some diagonal bracing...

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

Didn't like the way I made the rear crossbar so I milled it off. Also milled an angle on the back where they mount. Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr Then I measured the angles on the old one and recreated it better with new steel. Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr Now I just have to...

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

So I found a smallish Shad top case with mount plate for $50 on eBay and ordered it. When it gets here I’ll mock it up and decide if I like it. If not I’ll knock out a quick mount to put it on the wife’s Ryker. If I do I may still move it to the ryker but get a bigger bag for the Spyder.

    Passenger backrest/rack, differently

So after I made the driver backrest I was asked about a passenger backrest. They seem to run from $300 to $750, which is outright robbery in my book. Plus lots of designs won't work on my bike because of the mods I've made. So I set about making my own. I normally don't share projects that...

    Frunk cooler

Have you ever thrown a cold drink in your frunk and taken a ride then tried to drink it? That frunk sits directly between the radiators, and it roasts anything that you put in there. I decided to add some insulation. First I grabbed some foil backed bubble wrap I took out of my hot tub last...

    Akrapovic Sinister Silencer/F3 worth it?

I have the akra on mine. Honestly it drones a bit and sounds a lot (to me) like my kubota tractor. Shoulda saved the money.

    Drivers Backrest, done differently

That did occur to me but I was telling my son, one is fun. Two is work. As soon as money changes hands it’s a job. I’d rather just throw the idea and pics out there and let others run with it.

    Drivers Backrest, done differently

So riding around with the gauge cover instead of the windshield left me facing a lot more wind, and the style of seating doesn't really work for lots of windblast. I decided to look into a backrest, and once again any accessory from BRP is lots of money. OEM seemed to range from $350 to $400...

Crappy gloss black paint dealt with, differently

Forgot to show the mirrors: I did them mostly because I had small pieces left over and needed practice doing strongly curved pieces. Untitled by Uncle Grr!, on Flickr

Crappy gloss black paint dealt with, differently

So my bike was only available in black which is fine. The paint is apparently made of black toothpaste, which is not. Scratches super easily, and not resistant to any chemicals that I tried. Brake cleaner, goof-off, etc. I looked at the kits from wrapmyspyder, but I don't want my bike to be...
