I have not noticed a problem with the battery tender pigtail on my 2015 base RT until I went to put it on tender this week after it wouldn't start after a 2 week spell setting in the garage.
The battery tenders did not bring it to life, and the 12.2 V reading was unable to get it to fire off, so I pulled the battery access panel and used the tender with the alligator clips adapter to clip directly onto the Yuasa YTX24 HL battery that was new in the 2015. The Schumacher 1.5 Amp tender revived the battery to about 12.7 A and it started, so I took it for a 60 mile ride Tuesday but the battery only reads 12.8 after the ride and may need a load test to see if it can go next year.
When checking the Yuasa fused pigtail to see why the tender wouldn't charge I found a blown 3 Amp fuse. While relieved to find the problem, I checked the other fuses on my NOCO Genius battery charger and found a 10 A fuse, (charger/tender only puts out 0.75 A) and then a 7.5 amp fuse on the Schumacher clamp adapter (charger puts out 1.5 A). I will get some 8-10 amp fuses to replace the original 3A that was in the dealer supplied SAE Yuasa brand pigtail, so I can at least run my 6 amp draw minicompressor the next time I use it on the road.
Has anyone made a "jump cable" with SAE plugs or with 12 Volt cigarette plug ends to link two bikes and use one battery tender to supply two bikes over Winter? I wouldn't use it to jump start one bike to another although I have seen the cigarette lighter style cables touted on TV promos. Thoughts? Will 10 amp fuses give enough
protection when linking two batteries?
