Brake Lights Staying on after ignition turned off?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas why the brake lights are staying on after ignition is turned off and key remove?

No codes on Dash
No Limp mode, runs fine.

First noticed when we stopped for a break, saw the brake lights were on, stayed on for 5 minutes and would not go off until I started moving/pressing the brake pedal, then they went off. It has done it 3 times after we stop but seems to work fine when riding.

Going to see the dealer tomorrow to see if there is a simple fix, switch or adjustment but just wonder if anyone else has had this happen, thanks.

Sounds like the brake return spring is weak. Does it go off if you just lift the brake pedal?

If you haven't added an aftermarket full size brake pedal, then an adustment on the brake light switch seems to be in order. Doubt on a brand new bike that this is a return spring problem. FWIW

:agree: .... but I think that occurs on Higher mileage machines .... I would Clean the switch area thoroughly and spray with DRY silicone ..... good luck ... Mike

Brake light switch sticking. Brake lights will come on when brakes are applied with the key off by the way.

I adjusted mine to make it more sensitive for the cruise control to turn off with a brake tap. Sounds like you need to make yours less sensitive. Get under there and loosen the lock nut, then turn the other nut on the other side of the bracket to decrease the distance on the other side (the threads sticking out), then tighten the locknut back down. 5 minute deal. I may have the direction reversed but the principle is the same. Simple fix. No need for a dealer visit for sure.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just returned from the dealer, they cleaned and lubed the switch but the tech stated the plunger that comes out of the switch is sticking so a new replacement switch on the way. Suppose to be here in 4 days.

Interesting that when I left for the dealer earlier this morning in the cooler weather everything worked perfectly, stopped several times and could not get the brake light to stay on. On my way home from the dealer, as the day heated up the brake light stays on after every time I use the brake. I then have to stab the brake pedal (fast gentle push off/on) several times and then the brake light goes off.

Anyway new switch coming.

Thanks for the responses.

I had a look at the brake light switch and watched it as I pushed the brake petal, you can see the plunger on the switch being pulled out, which activates the brake light. As I release the brake pedal the plunger on the switch is very slow to retract or does not retract at all some times back into the switch housing. It is clean and well lubricated with dry silicone but still the plunger will not retract into the switch housing the way it should. New switch coming.

:agree: ...if the silicone didn't work ( cheap & simple cure ) then I think it was the switch itself ..... nothing lasts forever ... except Death :yikes:...... Mike
