• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Buying and price

Soooooooooo, I know this is often a touchy subject on forums, but eventually it becomes a regular staple of discussion. I've been looking at :spyder:s for 2 years now (went on one of the first group test rides during their pre-launch tour), and have finally decided that the time is right - I need.

I've been watching CL and ebay, and it seems like there's an oddly high expectation for selling price on used spyders on CL (really? 16k for a 2008 w/3500 niles and no extras? Really?), and on ebay bikes close enough to ride home are few and far between.

So, given the extra hassle and lack of apparent savings of buying used, I've been focusing on new. The first question I've had is 2008 or 2009? Are there really any significant changes worth paying more for a newer model?

Second question - what's a good price these days, and how much can one haggle on a bike? I'm usually a total hard-nose when it comes to squeezing every penny out of a car dealer, but I've never bought a bike new.

Any buying tips or suggestions are welcome...

If your dealer has 2008 models in stock, you may be able to get a better price.

When I bought my 2009 spyder, BRP only shipped sold units so it was very hard for dealers to build inventory and therefore not a whole lot of room to bargain, and believe me I tried.

Good luck.

And welcome

There are no significant changes between the 08 and 09's. Some different brake pads and an update to the Emergency brake. You can ask your dealer to perform those updates to an 08 before you pick it up.

I bought by 08 SM5 brand new in the crate April 30th of this year. No regrets and I saved some coin. I imagine a dealer is getting very willing to deal on 08's at this point, so if you can find one -go for it.

There is always someone here that gets some sort of crazy deal on an 08 or 09. The hard part is replicating that in another part of the country. Every dealer is different, every deal is different. Look at the other price threads here and see what you find.

I paid $14500 for my 08. I thought that was a fair deal at the time. Saved me $1250 over the price of an 09... same warranty, etc.

Just watch for all the BS fees that a dealer will snag you for. Tax+ tags+ freight. Some will give you a fair price and try to jack you on the fees. Like Assembly fees.....THEY HAVE TO PUT IT TOGETHER anyway! It's not like you can pick up your spyder in a crate and take it home.

Buy the '08 and get the better price...your warranty is for 2 years from when you buy it so you're covered whichever way you go. Get the BEST warranty with either bike...gives you roadside assistance and coverage for work for first 5 years...

Take care and get something soon...it's prime ryding season!

I just bought a 2009 - difference was $500 over a 2008, but the wholesale value was $2K better. Even with the BEST warranty, I feel better about buying something that has a bit more manufacturing expertise behind it - just me tho.

I got mine for $15,150 out the door (no tax here), with a couple of farkles. :spyder: You might consider buying from an out of state dealer and shipping it - my dealer has a couple of 2008's (yellow) for $14,500, and I understand there's a Silver Moon '08 in Portland for $!4,200

There's really no chance for used out here, unless you buy from E-bay, take your chances, and pay $700 to ship it - there are only 7 Spyders in the entire Northwest (according to the BRP map).

Good luck with your quest.

There is some dealing going on in my area now that there is inventory an just an overall slowdown in the economy shop around for a good price :agree:some people have high expectations on resale and better off buying new welcome:spyder2::2thumbs:
