Compare spyder with Honda goldwing trike

Questions

New member
My wife and I both ride Honda goldwing Trikes. I have considered getting a new one and I would like for someone who has experience with both to give me an actual comparison between the two. I have never ridden one. The dealership in Greenville Texas won't let you test drive until all the paperwork is done. I don't want to do that until I pretty well know I am going to buy.

Find another dealer. Most have demo Spyders to try. I would not have bought mine if I would have been forced to buy it first. That's a bunch of BS. Just be aware the Spyder is not a motorcycle or will it ride like your trike. It's a completely different ride. The only way you will know if you like it is to try it yourself.

:welcome: There are some past threads that discuss differences between the two. There are some GW trike riders on this forum also.

tell THAT dealer to KISS YOUR back wheels !!!!

CAN AM has a DEMO PROGRAM.... for just such
interested buyers. FIND ANOTHER DEALER !!!
and if you don't...?; you may see just what
kind of dealer it really is; when you bring the
Spyder in for service.

YOUR CHAIN IS BEING.... JERKED !!!!!

the other option is... do ALL of the paperwork;
with the exception of the FINAL signature. then
look up at the sales dork; and tell them you
won't sign it.... UNTIL YOU RIDE IT. if they
refuse; grab ALL of the paperwork and ride
to another dealer.

you HAVE to ride these, before you buy them.
it simply DOES NOT ride the same as a conventional
trike or motorcycle. you are either ready to ride one;
or you're not. and you sure can't ride it on paper.

Something is wrong. My dealer was practically begging me to take a test ride. Move on until you find one you can relate to...it's worth the drive.

You have to test ride, I had a Spyder for 3+years, Now i have a Tri Glide, Two very different rides,
But most of all two different riding styles.

I recommend a couple of test rides. The Spyder feels odd, at first. It takes a while to get the feel for it.

Do not do business with a dealer who will not let you test drive!!!

I put 38,000 miles on a Gold Wing GL 1800 with a Motor Trike kit on it. I loved it dearly and really did not want to see it go. Last year I bought my wife an RTSE5 and enjoyed it the VERY few times she let me ride it.

In June she bought me a new RTSM for my birthday and I had to let the GL go but it was hard.

Now I do not want it back.... the RT is a much more enjoyable ride... better ride, less fatigue, easier to steer, more storage, better looks, comparable sound system and it loves to rev. Okay, I miss the low end torque of the GL but once the tach gets into the 5,000 plus range, the Honda is out of my mind! I have 3,500 miles on the RT in two months and every one has been enjoyable.

As you can see by my signature, I have a GW Motor Trike and a 2011 RT-S. I am keeping the GW and love it after 61,000 miles. I post my thought on the RT touring part of this site. Bottom line is they are different rides. Both have great things the other does not have. I only have 3,500 miles on BR1 and really like it. Both are comfortable. The electronics, radio, CB etc on the GW is much better than the Spyder. You won't go wrong with either... good luck.

You are one strait shootin dude.
Hope to meet you one day!
Maybe you can make the trip to Spyderfest 2012. I enjoy your posts. I looked very hard at the GW before buying the RT.

Anyhoo. I am sitting in Milwaukee right now and will be heading home to SE Missouri tomorrow. I haven't taken long rYdes on a GW but the long trips on the RT are wonderful.

Don't let the dealer tell you that you can't demo. Mine said I could only test ride in the parking lot and I replied that if he wanted to sell me the bike it had to be rode tested. Finally relented and had another rider ecsort me. Buying unridden is a mistake . Don't let the test ride sway you away fron the spyder , it WILL take getting used to and more than just a few miles.

I rode a GW trike , 89000 miles worth and loved it. The transition to the spyder is drastic ...total different handling characteristics. Started wondering if I made a mistake but now getting the hang of it.Let the bike do the work , don't force it and befrore you know it you'll be comfortable.I still have some nervys on the twistys I like to ride but confidence is building.

buyer beware... and wear what you are about to buy.

there are some very GOOD comparrison posts on here.
you simply HAVE to test ride a Spyder, before you pull
the trigger on the deal. if you don't test rider one
before you buy it... Buyer's Remorse may slap you
right in the kisser.

hell... if you're in the Chattanooga, TN area; and you
are dealing with a dealership that will NOT allow you
to test ride...?; you can test ride mine! or... we'll go
to my dealership, and they'll roll you out into the
parking lot and then tell you where the test ride route
is they've layed out. YA SIMPLY GOTTA TEST RIDE !

Have only ridden 1 RT (Cowtown Limited Performance version). So I can't speak directly to this post other than to say I purchased my RS sight unseen (on the Pre-Buy deal in 2007). And I can tell you without a doubt if I had test ridden my Spyder I would never have purchased it.

Since I was committed after laying down over $15K, I gritted my teeth and put some miles on it. It helped that Lamont had been riding his for about 2 months and he also went through a pretty difficult transition from 2 wheels.

I seriously felt the Spyder was the worst vehicle purchase I'd ever made! I was actually afraid to ride it over 45mph on the first time out. I was over controlling it and it seemed twitchy (sound familiar?). :yikes:

But after about 300 miles it started to grow on me. And not too long after that I decided it was one of the best motorcycles I'd ever ridden. :ohyea: So, I'm only saying that depending on your individual characteristics, you may hate the RT at first and you won't get over it in just 1 test ride.

Yet some get on the Spyder and ride away falling in love instantly. It just depends. I've not yet heard of anyone that doesn't like the Spyder after putting enough miles on to really get the hang of it.

Take the MSF Trike & Hack course - several have Spyders available. I took the course, and will no longer consider riding a rear wheel trike or hack. I'd rather ride a Honda 50 in LA on the 405 at 5pm…..

I had a Goldwing that I rode to the East Coast 5 times, all up and down the West Coast and never
had a breakdown. It is the most reliable bike I ever owned. I have 2 Spyders, one for me and one for my wife. I love to ride them and they are comfortable and awesome in the corners. Having said all
The Spyder is not even close to being reliable as the Goldwing. If you want a bike to go coast to
Coast with no worries, stay with the Goldwing. If you don't go on long trips, try the Spyder, but if you buy the Spyder be sure and get the extended warranty cause you will probably need it.

Thanks for the kind words, Steve. I do not know where Oran, MO is located, the boot heal perhaps. I graduated from St. Louis University in 1958 after my AF hitch, got a commission and went back in, retiring in 1981. I am originally from So. Illinoios, but have not been back there for many years. No family there anymore.

My Gold Wing Motor Trike has run like a hose...no problems...none. I am always a little gun shy with BR1 as some have had problems. I have not had any, but it is in the back of my mind.

Trips on either machine are good. As I get older, 79 in two weeks, I tire more easily than I used to. I used to ride from San Antonio, TX to Santa Fe, NM non stop, but had to make a stop last time, and don't go anymore. Every Saturday, I ride with my old riding buddies....we are all getting older together...ha ha Been riding with about 15 of our group over 20 years...mostly retired military, with some civilian retirees too.

A friend of mine asked how I liked BR1...I said it took me 1,000 miles to get used to it. He suprised me wtih a 2010 RT-S SM5 and is getting used to it...has lots of good words for it.

I would love to go to Spyderfest, but the wife is not getting any younger and I don't leave her over night
any more.
Hey, it is hell getting old, Steve. Don't do it..it is bad for your health...:gaah:

Well said, Firefighter, well said. I don't wish to stir the pot, but I have had two Gold Wings, a 1500 and my present '02 1800 (triked it in '05). With 150K on them, I never had them in the shop for other than oil changes when on the road and could not do it myself easily.

IF I had the energy and my butt was a little tougher like it use to be, I would head out for the four corners ride and never look back. Until I get more miles on BR1, I would not atempt it. I know some of our guys have done long trips, but I do not have that confidence at this point. Again, well said.

Compare Spyder to Goldwing Trike

Call Adam or Jon at Broadway Powersports in Tyler and tell them you want to take a test ride on a Spyder. Their phone number is 9035956288.

At least a couple of rides. I actually think it takes about 500 miles, and I'm not sure you'll be able to accomplish that with test rides. I guess bottom line is asking yourself what you are wanting and have an open mind to a different style or riding in the future if you opt for the spyder.

I think an apples to apples comparison should be made between the two machines.
First, the goldwing platform started life in 1975 so its been in production for over 35 years, while the spyder has been manufactured for 4 years.
Second, Honda has been making motorcycles since 1955. BRP since 2008. Even though BRP has been in the business of off road machines of various descriptions for many years it was not manufacturing spyder 'till 2008. I don't think any motorcycle manufacturer has come to market the first year with such a new platform and new technologies in that platform for a long time.
Finally, we see another blanket statement about how undependable the spyders are. I also own two spyders and find them very dependable as I am sure many others on this site do. Yes, there have been issues, however, I am sure that if one looks into the history of almost any motorcycle, they are not without their issues.
