• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

instrument cluster replacement

I see a few instrument clusters on eBay for around $100 (excellent condition), a couple of them even got about the same miles as on my Spyder. I was thinking to buy it and keep it as spare in case something happens to this one. What do you think? Also, is it illegal in CA to swap them? Any other issues? Thank you so much

It isn't illegal to swap odometers when you sell it in California, but you have to state the true and accurate mileage of the vehicle on the pink slip that you sign and give to the new owner.

Cluster replacement requires hookup to BUDS in most cases. Some firmware versions may not be compatible with other component firmware, unless updated. Some years of clusters may also not be compatible with earlier year's Spyder features, especially for the RT. If it comforts you to have a spare, by all means do it, but be aware of the possible difficulties. BTW, Federal law requires placement of a sticker with the true mileage on the left doorjamb. I have yet to see how that is accomplished on a Spyder. :roflblack: A good dealer will put a label with the readings of both odometers and the date on the back of the speedo, but most Spyder dealers don't bother. If you mark the title with a different mileage than what shows, it may not go further than the new owner reading it and the state recording it. The new title will just show that the true mileage is "unknown" or "incorrect" in most states. It will affect resale value.

thanks! This might be a stupid question, what are BUDS? also, my :spyder2: is an RS 2008 same as the cluster advertised, you think it would be a simple plug and play in this case? thanks again for your help

BUDS is the dealer's update and diagnostic system. You have to be hooked to the computer at the dealership. The swap year for year should work, but the new cluster may not have the same level of firmware as your Spyder, so your systems would have to be connected to BUDS, checked, and updated if needed.

If you were a dishonest person .....

1. Swap clusters and run a crap load of miles.
2. swap clusters again once a year to keep the miles low then take it to get inspected. In NY they record the miles on the cluster at every inspection cycle. This is very important so DMV will never catch on !!!
3. When you go to sell your Spyder make sure that the low miles cluster is installed.
4. :congrats:, you just screwed the next guy and he has no clue that it happened.

I hope nobody would ever do this, but it happens all the time here in NY with snowmobiles. The last sled I sold had 8900+ miles on it. Two weeks later I saw it on craigslist for alot more money with only 2200 miles on it. I flagged his post, but I'm sure it was to late by then.

I'm not sure if Buds would catch this or not. Does buds read the Cluster in regards to miles or hours, or does it read a different computer somewhere else ??? :dontknow:

:clap:Yea cool, thanks for the tip but that’s not my intention, anyways, not that I need to explain why, I got this bike not too long ago and love it and not planning on selling it and hardy put any miles on since I don’t ride it all the time. I got it coz I saw the price on a new cluster is over $600 and wanted to keep an extra one incase this one dies on me one day, I don’t know, that’s all.

I would ask myself why is there a used cluster for sale , and would think it was swapped out for a warranty repair and is defective.:dontknow: Just thinking out loud .

I understanding is our mileages is also in the bike's computer along with the hours, so if one was to swap out the cluster with a lower miles reading and you take it to a dealer and it get hocked up to buds it world show two different readings and I am sure that would set of red flags.

The cluster is the main computer...and it is where the mileage is stored. I am not sure about the hours.
