• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Just how thick is the rubber of the front tire?

Found a screw in a front tire today. The tires have over a 1/4" of tread on them and are in great condition. The screw I found is about 3/8" long and was not quite all the way in the thick tread portion of the tire. So, just how much rubber is really there, beyond the tread portion of the tire? It isn't leaking at all, but it's also just sitting there cold. I have no idea how long it's been in there either.

If you pulled the screw out and: the tire didn't go down or leak air immediately; it didn't grate or drag out (of) a steel wire as it came out (extremely unlikely on a Kenda!!); or you couldn't see white threads at the bottom of the hole.... then you should be good to go & to keep going for a while. If however, it did any of the above then you need to get the tire 'professionally' checked & possibly repaired, & I say possibly cos not all 'punctures' that do any of the above are actually repairable - if you've damaged or disturbed the tread ply 'belts' enough, it could be just a throw-away. :(

If it hasn't done anything bad as mentioned above, then while you should be good to go, I would still strongly suggest you keep a close eye on it for a few thousand miles - it might start to lose air thru the 'weak spot' left by the screw, altho if it was in a tread block there shouldn't be only thing 'weak' about it; or the tread might start to bulge & de-laminate cos the hole left by the screw has let some air or moisture penetrate into the ply layers of the tire's construction even if it didn't damage actually the ply/belts themselves, but that is usually a fairly slow process & generally pretty obvious if you are alert enough to watch for it, so you can see it start & remove/replace the tire well before it becomes a safety issue.

Btw, it might pay to put a paint or wax crayon mark on the sidewall nearest the 'hole' just so you can find the correct spot later - marking the tread will wear off pdq, & the tread blocks all look very similar so the right spot can be damned hard to find later....

TIRE THICKNESS

Well you can only measure the tread depth....unless you have a REALLY large set of calipers......The thickness of the carcass is probably less than almost all car tires if you talking about a KENDA. ...........Mike :bbq:

There's no 'probably' about that Mike!! The carcass tread thickness IS less than ALL car tires if you are talking about a Kenda!!

And it appears that the two plies or belts that they do have are about half the strength/thickness of almost all other plies used in vehicle tires too.....

Personally, I dunno how they ever qualified to get an M/C rating or in fact ANY rating for anything more than a kiddies toy wheel-barrow!! :banghead:

I didn't see any type of damage other than just the small hole the screw left. I packed it with silicone cement to keep "stuff" out of the hole and I marked the sidewall. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. Maybe take a few short rides close to home too. I'm hoping we have a tire guru here that knows the thickness of the plies and cords and such.

...The real reason they stamp " For Motorcycle use only " on the tires, is NOT because they are Special Super Duper tires for MTC's ....... it's really a warning to NOT USE them on a CAR, because they will FAIL.......:gaah::gaah::gaah:.............Mike :bbq:
