NC Helmet law...

The helmet law in North Carolina may be changing. The House Transportation Committee has approved legislation to allow riding without a helmet. It now goes to the House Judiciary Panel. If passed, the law would allow adults 21 and older to ride without a helmet if the have had a motorcycle license or endorsement for one year, completed a motorcycle safety course and have insurance covering $10,000.00 in medical benefits.

Same here, I like my helmet. But if someone wants to ride without it, that is there decision not mine.

One question though, will motorcycle insurance rates go up? Or is just the health insurance that is going to take the hit?

Historically neither really change, or at least none of the studies I've seen can show a causal relationship. That's typically just rhetoric used by the safety nazi's when they rail against the change in laws.

Personally, I rarely ride without a helmet but agree it should be our choice, not our obligation.

Michigan changed its helmet law last year and riders must carry additional insurance to ride without a helmet. While that might be a good compromise, how many riders will ride without the extra coverage? I know many riders who are responsible and carry the additional insurance, but there are many more who ride without it. They only get in legal trouble if they're caught without the coverage (like pulled over for speeding, etc....).

So, if they get in an accident and they don't have the additional insurance, who pays the medical bills (covered or uncovered)?...We all do!!!

Sure, the Spyder is far safer than most cycles out there, but I will still wear my helmet and gear. Everyone else has the right to make their own choice, but they must follow the law.

So, the question becomes: if you are in an accident and you don't have the required supplemental insurance, who should pay your thousands of dollars in medical bills? The tax payers???!!! NOOOOO!!!!

bicycles, horses, skates,convertables,golf carts,farm tractors,rideing mowers, ect. ect. ect. They all have accidents each year with uninsured riders. When the rest of the mobile world has to wear a helmet then i guess I will have to do the same. In the mean time I don't ride & spend my money in helmet states & I worry just how many rights & freedoms we are willing to give up.----Budro

I have been 47 yrs doin' those rides. (BSSL) before socialist safety laws. I really need my government to make laws to protect me from others. I don't need them to protect me from myself. I can still leave OH & go west without a helmet('til ya get to the left coast) just takes a little planing. Don't go any further east than the great commonwealth of PA who recently came to their senses and repealed the helmet law, as did MI,KY,FL. ------Budro
btw your fine state of IN is still freedom friendly when it comes to motorcycles, we visit there a lot. Delaware, & New Jersey are states I have not ridden in & they have a SSL so it seems for the time being I won't be able to add them to my map ----Budro

I guess that if you ride without a helmet you would have to attach your blue tooth device to your ear lobe so you can still talk on the phone while riding.:gaah:

I've been riding since 1968 and have never ridden without a helmet. Had a helmet literally save my life twice. I think people who ride without helmets are insane, but, hey...it's their choice.

I think people that encase their heads in a fiberglass bubble that impedes their vision, hearing, and the periferial vision so important at driveways & sideroads. Not to mention the discomfort in hot environs, that has sweat runing in your eyes, overheats your brain & effects your reaction time. Well I won't say that they are insane because that is very rude and immature. they are just exercising their choice & their own rights---Budro

I don't seem to have the problem of impaired peripheral or frontal vision. Sure hearing is somewhat impaired, but what about those folks who wear half helmets/no helmet and have earbuds in so they can hear their tunes? Even cagers hearing is impaired.

I guess it was just a matter of time before someone posted about how they believe it's safer without a helmet because the the weight, sight and heat issues. Delude yourself all you want but NONE of those excuses are valid. A properly fitted helmet increases your likelihood of survival by several orders of magnitude, it's simple physics back up with decades of statistics and research.

If you choose to ride without a helmet that's your choice but DO NOT go down the path that begins with how unsafe helmets are, it just shows your ignorance.
