Newbie's review of test ride of 2020 RT Limited

Hello everyone,

Newbie here hoping to buy a 2020 RT Limited in the near future. Looking forward to posting on here and getting to know some of you folks. Live full-time in a motorhome. Currently spending the winter in Las Vegas, NV. Travel for 6 months from Spring to Fall. Hoping to tow the Spyder on a trailer behind the motorhome and leave the SUV behind in storage.

I had briefly ridden all three Can-Am models at a riding course in December. That RT was a 2019 model. Last Saturday I test rode a 2020 RT Limited. As soon as I sat on it, I noticed a big difference in how it fit me. I'm 5'11". On the 2019 I felt way too close to the handlebars and didn't have enough room to stretch my legs. The leg room on the 2020 is greatly increased with the large floorboards and the seat being slightly farther back. Way more comfortable. The handlebars were at a comfortable distance. Probably wouldn't need the optional long reach handlebars, but can add them later if necessary. The Tri Axis handlebars from previous models are not on the 2020. According to the dealer, the standard handlebars are not adjustable. If you want a longer or shorter reach, you swap out the bars. Seat was a bit lower and very comfortable. Would probably want the back rest for long rides.

I have no experience on motorcycles or trikes, so I'm starting fresh and not bringing muscle memory to the Can-Am. And I can't compare the 2020 to previous models. All I know is that everything seemed so easy the first time riding in traffic. Riding slowly around a track in a parking lot is plenty easy, but I wondered about the reality of being in traffic at higher speeds. Except for the paddle upshifting and handlebars, it felt kinda like driving a car. My 64-year-old legs could hold up a bike now, but I ain't gettin' no younger, so I liked the simple concept of pulling up to a red light and just stopping and sitting there.

Ride lasted about 35 minutes. Was surprised at how smooth it rode at highway speed. Highway was straight, and the side roads were mostly residential, so I was not able to take it fast through curves. Don't know how top heavy it would feel with speed. Steering was effortless at all speeds. Had heard the steering could be a bit touchy in some previous models at highway speeds, but I didn't sense it in the 2020. With a full-face helmet and the visor down, I preferred the windshield to be in its lowest position for a view of 2 to 3 inches over the top. At its highest position, I was looking through the windshield about 3 inches below the top. The vents let in a lot of air, but the right amount for my liking. Not a lot of wind noise. Mirrors were steady. The automatic downshifting from gear to gear was noticeable, and the slight revving of the engine with each downshift caught me off guard at first. I thought maybe I was still on the throttle by mistake and had to double check myself. I think I'd get used to it pretty quickly, though. LED dashboard was nice and bright in sunshine. Didn't play around with the Bluetooth system or stereo.

As a newbie, I'm probably not thinking of other aspects you experienced riders want to know about it. But I wanted to pass along my observations. Please feel free to ask any questions. Hope it helps.

I can't post how old my wife IS, but if you were from S.C you might have laid next to her when Born. WE have been riding a 2012 RTL together when she said she wouldn't ride my 208 Vulcan any longer. We picked up that RTL three years ago. We also travel in a motorhome and for the past 10 years towed a SMART CAR. So for three years now we have trailer towed are Spyder. While traveling we have WEST each year we have been in the seat for over 12 hours on some long rides.
Every thing you liked about the 2020 is a plus for YOU. If your looking for a safe relaxed ride you will love the spyder with all the added fun in cruising in the OPEN AIR.
in the past three years I did all the driving while wife was at least once SLEEPING while i was cruising down I90 outside Rapid City. I was looked the mirror and saw her looking some what DOWN, SO I looked down a little over the side, I watched her a minute until over the MIC I asked her what she was looking at...... again HEY what are you looking at...... (I fell asleep) was her reply.
Well this past FALL, she said that she wanted to drive.... OK
Was thinking of the new 2020 but I picked up a 2019 F3L three weeks ago, she has taken trips with me LEARNING, yesterday was 2 hours 80 miles thru town, hwy, traffic.
2020 RT seems nice and maybe next year spring will be a another trade in for left over 2020.
We plan on living on the RT again this year on our travels.
Good Luck

Went yesterday to sit on Rt 2020. I think I’m to short for the new one. Hard to reach the handlebars. I Just about reach the break peddle. The seat was a little to wide. The floor boards to low. The Spyder is beautiful but if your 5 feet 2 inches there a problem. Did anybody else have this problem? I have 2014 RTs and 2017 F3

Were you on the way to the trike rally at Deadwood? Spent two months last summer in Rapid City. Talked with a bunch of folks at the trike rally in July and the Sturgis rally in August. Hope to get to the trike rally this year.

Glad to hear these machines will lull people to sleep. I sat on two Harley Tri Glides with two different engines. With the engines running, the noise and vibrations were a complete turn off to me. I'm more about smooth and quiet.

I can see how it might not fit a short person, especially trying to reach the brake pedal.

Wish they were adjustable. I didn't see any way to adjust them, and the salesman said you have to buy either the short reach or long reach bars and swap them.

I think that when Mike says “adjusting”, he means loosening the handlebar clamps and rotating the bars a little toward you or away from you, Dahai. you can do that on the F3 models as the bars are round.

That is what my dealer told me when I bought the 2020 Spyder RTL. I don’t have it yet, so time will tell. However he did say it was no problem to move the handlebars back so that I do not have to lean forward which doesn’t work for my back.
