Last week I was out riding and my 2012 RT started to struggle on acceleration. Then the check engine light came on and the code was P0175 "System too rich Bank 2"... So I searched this website and discovered that there were about 15 different things that could cause this. I was a bit discouraged in that my closest dealer is 3.5 hours away. Limp mode did not occur but the bike would run rough, and then seemed to be ok once at a constant cruising speed. So I got some SeaFoam and added it to the gas and ran the bike for about 20 miles, no change. So I parked the bike in the garage and started to make plans on getting a trailer to haul her to the shop. Two days later, I took her out again and while the check engine light and code still remained, she seemed to have a bit more power, so I ran about another 20 miles or so. Then a few days later, I took her out again and she was again a bit better, but still not right, so I topped off the tank with about 2.5 gallons of pure gasoline (no alcohol) 90 octane. The check engine light was still on but the bike was running much smoother and we rode about 60 miles, we stopped for some sunscreen, and when I started the bike back up after our short shopping experience the check engine light was gone! I have since run two additional tanks of 93 Octane fuel with alcohol and still no problems! I have always put the highest grade gasoline in her that the station has, but I'm guessing I got some bad gas? Or finally the result of the bike not being used? We bought her on July 29th of last year, and she only had 903 miles on her, but we have put nearly 5,000 miles on her since?
Question is, if the error code says system too rich how would using a fuel cleaner like SeaFoam clear it up? Is the computer comparing the difference between bank one and bank two, so if bank one was a bit lean, did the computer think back two was too rich? Either way, there was something wrong because the bike did not perform well. But all seems to be good now!?
