There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Radar Detector Questions

I'd like to get a radar detector for my RT.

Ideally, it would live in the trunk in the back (I read in another thread that will work), but for that to work I'd need to have some kind of very visual or auditory notification. Since I use my iPhone 6's bluetooth and connect to speakers in my helmet I don't know if the iPhone can manage both connecting to the radar detector and my helmet speakers at the same time (which is the only way I could hear an alert).

The other option would be something visual, but then it needs to be very strong (a strobe?) since I don't look down all that often in the canyons.

A third option might be to use my speakers on the bike exclusively for audio for the radar detector, but that really feels like a cumbersome idea.

Preferably, the detector would be out of sight if I get pulled over. I imagine it's much harder to say you didn't know if you were going fast with a radar detector in view!

They sometimes giving out tickets just 5 miles over the limit, and I ride a lot.

I'm sure others have solved these issues already, so I'm hoping for some insight on brands and models that will integrate into my iPhone centric audio while I'm riding.

PS - I do have two empty gauge openings that I can make use of.

I have the dash mount designed for motor cycles (http://www.advdesigns.com/adtpxrade.html). It is water proof and has a cluster of LED's that I mounted below the lip of the dash. It is uber bright and never fails to get my attention. I try not to speed but it is always good to know when radar is present. I came into a town when on vacation when my radar went off. It was 50 from the last sign I checked but I looked down at my GPS and it saying the speed limit was 25, I missed the change in speed sign but was able to slow down in time to prevent the ticket. When I went back I realized that a large truck had broken down just before the sign and was blocking it.

Thanks for the suggestion and the link!

I'd love to see a snapshot of the detector in place, with the lights lit up (or at least visible).

I have used Escort

from the very beginning of their existence ..no tickets..nock on wood..

Once a buddy and I were on a CO. freeway going up a hill..the detector went nuts..I had an ear plug..this was pre all the new fangled stuff and I don't listen to music when I ride..yea, Im weird.. anyway.. 55 mph in that stretch, we were hitting at least 75..I hit the brakes hard and he did too, as he followed me..we topped the hill at 55 and there were 5 state trooper or sheriff 's cars...all angled for the chase. they looked at us , like "wHaT tHe?" :D

Check them out.. Might be what you are looking for.. https://www.escortradar.com/

What Bluetooth system are you using in your helmet? Does it handle more than one connection? The Sena SM10, is a dongle that could send the signal to your helmet. Provisos are that your in helmet system can take a second input and that the radar detector has a 1/8" audio output.

I've got a uClear 200, which to my knowledge only accepts one connection.

I use a Cobra irad 900. It links to my galaxy s4 phone (will work with an iPhone too). It works in conjunction with an app on the phone. This along with my Sena smh10 gives me visual on the phone and audible through my helmet.
Seems to work really good. It hasn't missed a beat yet.

I wonder if my Beltronics will do that?

Currently I use a light on the dash near the windshield easy for me to see.

Are detectors illegal in your area? Why not just mount where you can see it? I thought it was only VA and DC where they were illegal.

RADAR

:yikes:...........I've posted this info before....." RADAR " is now the dinosaur of speed detection......" LAZER " is what is more likely to get you........IMHO, spending a pile of money on a Radar detector is like purchasing " Asteroid Prevention Ins."..............neither are likely to be useful................I'm not sure if RADAR GUNS are even sold any more ( at least to police dept's. )...........former LEO.....Mike

They may be legal, but I think it would be a lot harder to get out of a ticket with a detector in view than it would without one.

Here is a recent review on Radar Detectors that may help you make a decision. http://www.radarbusters.com/Radar-Detector-Comparison-Guide-s/2461.htm

There are still some small towns across the country that still use the radar guns. I learned this from a small town speed trap in the mountains of CO to the tune of $220. This was a area where the speed went fron 60 to 45 to 35 to 25 all in about 200 yards. :yikes::yikes:

I drive to and from Baton Rouge weekly... I have a Escort 9500ix ... it detects "K -- KA -- & Laser band" there is not a day that my 9500ix does not pick up quite a few police radar signals on my trips ... i'll keep using one.. in fact I am looking for a mount for my 2014 RT and I 'll mount one on my spyder.. I don't habitually speed.. but where I get in trouble is where the speed limit drops and police know where to set up .. its money in the bank for them..

As noted above, most radar these days may be laser and laser is light. If you put the detector in the trunk, frunk or anywhere out of sight (in the dark) it will never see the light of a laser unit.

Mounted in the clear is needed to see the light...

While lazer is used in our area, it is much more likely they will be using K band since it is much cheaper and they can use it while moving. I also found that even lazer will be detected before I get into the line of sight, some how it still splatters a bit. It is easy to see they still use radar, my unit goes off when a police car is behind me or coming at me.

They may be legal, but I think it would be a lot harder to get out of a ticket with a detector in view than it would without one.

My experience suggests that possession of a detection device appears to guarantee the issuance of a ticket.

WAY BACK WHEN........HAHA

I really have NO DOG in this fight so to speak........But this is how " LAZAR " works .........The "gun " does not transmit a signal in advance .......so a detector has nothing to identify.....The LEO aims it like a rifle scope .....puts you in the cross hairs ........activates it and locks it in .......it's all over in a mille-second ...........The LEO is already 99 % sure you are speeding ....that's why He/She is using the " lazar " on you.........The " lazar " just verifies the " EXACT " speed of the object..........Also to the best of my knowledge their are NO LAZAR DETECTORS.....................Lazar and Radar are two completely different principles ..............I hope this helps someone out ........Mike
