• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Hello all,

I hope that today as well as all of the others that end in Y go well for you. I have a trip coming up in about 4 weeks and I have been going over the numbers in my head and gas alone will be roughly $400(round trip). The total trip should be about 2400 miles so I am thinking on average a fill up for me is about $18. I know for some of you, $400 is a drop in the bucket but for me it is a gush of water in the bucket nojoke...so my quandary is this: do I ride slower to save fuel, but lose precious time or burn up the highway to save time and maybe energy but lose precious fuel? What have some of you done on your long trips? Thanks in advance for entertaining my thoughts.

I think it is always best to drive a bit slower. Enjoy the scenery, stop and smell the roses as they say.

Being in a hurry on a trip just gets the adrenaline going and you arrive tired out for nothing. IMO--much less enjoyment of your time.

Unless there is a compelling reason to go fast, like timing, I go slow and enjoy, like the above people.
A "value meal" or sandwich with water at noon saves a lot. Ask at motels for reasonable placess to eat and most of all, enjoy the trip and have fun.

I'm a middle of the road rider. Pace yourself, maybe five over the speed limit. Enjoy the scenery, but go at a clip.

Any faster and a speeding ticket will blow your budget. Especially in 'those little towns.' ;)

yeah, a speeding ticket would ruin the whole trip for sure.

I am also a plus five type of person. By slower I meant not 80 or 90 mph.

Think a lot depends on your time schedule. If time is not an issue take your time and enjoy the scenery:yes:

MPG

I also have an RSS and I have found that trying to stretch the gas mileage is pretty much futile .......The 998 likes to run in the upper RPM range and actually gives decent MPG's that way......JMHO, ..............and like others have suggested .....aticket really SU*KS .....Mikeguyver

keep rpm 5k

My rs gets great mpg if I keep it at 5k.....enjoy the trip the and don't worry about the gas. The difference from 28 mpg and 30 is not much money.....

Okay let's say that you go slow and get 35 mpg for 2,400 miles that would be about 68 gallons of gas and I go fast and get 32 mpg for 2,400 miles that would be 75 gallons. Today I paid $4.87 for a gallon of premium :yikes: so that extra 7 gallons cost me $34.09. Not a lot of money in the big picture so go whatever speed you like and don't fret the small stuff.

Disclaimer: your mileage may vary. :roflblack:

Hard to say..!!

if its freeways and such..keep with the flow.. Back roads hills mountains and twisties set your own pace. Give yourself a good margine of time and enjoy the trip...:ohyea::ohyea:

Ann,
Could you define "slow", and "fast"?
I get 42 mpg, when I keep it between 60, and 65 mph.
Do you have a category for that speed? :D

save gas or time

I agree with Mike , the 998 likes to run about 5k and seems to give the best mileage , I am a speed limit kind of person , and the little towns are the ones that look for revenue so keep it legal and don't bust the bank . Slow down and smell the roses , life is just to short to pass them up.

Bob, I will be honest 60 to 65 MPH would be hard for me to maintain as I am accustomed to faster speeds but that 42mpg sounds awesome!
