• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

So i have been trying to sell my GS all winter so i can upgrade in the spring with not a lot of success but tax season and the thought of warmer weather is starting to stir the pot a little bit. My question is i have had 2 people offer to pay a portion of the purchase price and the rest next month or 2 and then i give them the title. They all seem suprised when i say that the bike will not move until paid in full and any "deposits" paid will be kept if they back out as my insurance that the deal goes thru and i am not giving money back and missing out on a potential sale. Did i miss something or do people actually let stuff go while holding title without payment in full??

No you didn't miss anything but a hard time with some scammers. Cash only is the only way to go on a private sale. You aren't a bank or a credit union, don't try to be one.

You haven't missed a thing...

Other than there's a lot of folks out there with a whole lot of guts, and very little brains. nojoke

Not only no, but heck no!!!!!! Your asking price is very low to start with. If they can't afford it, they should start looking at bicycles. Just a scam brewing. I would not part with the :ani29: or the title until all the cash is in hand. They can get their own loans from a bank or credit union. If neither will finance them, they are not a good candidate for the purchase of your :spyder2:. Hang in there and don't get taken to the cleaners by scammers.

Good luck with the sale. I am also trying to sell my 13 STS as I have decided after two years the three wheeled beast just isn't for me. I have been contacted not unlike yourself by these types of people and they are all surprised when I tell them the bike will not move nor will the title be signed over until I have cash in hand. No pay pal transfers or other such nonsense. I had one guy trying to scam me saying he was some rear admiral in the navy stationed "in base" and he could not make phone calls but they had access to the internet for security reasons. Sorry but a phone line is more secure than the internet. When I called him out for what he was he never contacted me again. I have already bought my other bike and dropped the Spyder to storage only insurance. I will get it out once a month or so just to "blow" the cobwebs out of it and keep it running. It will also stay on a charge. I have a potential buyer and keeping my fingers crossed it goes through.

That's what I thought but I just wanted to be sure, one guy called me and said he would do it and pay next month but was astounded when I said I was keeping any cash given to me .
oh well if it doesn't sell I will trade in and get newer bike

Don't do the "time-sale" thing, even for a friend. It almost never works out.
I've had situations where I "needed" to sell a vehicle, but there were no takers. My solution was to drop the price $50 or $100 every week. I started with a fair price, but ended up selling for a massive discount. In the end, for me, it was more a matter of getting something versus the vehicle sitting in my garage unused. Anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Just my two cents...

I'm with the rest here... If they want to give you a 'holding deposit' that's just to show their good faith & the intention that they certainly ARE coming back with the rest of the money to buy the Spyder - and in the meantime you get to hold the deposit AND the Spyder just as would happen in any commercial transaction!! Nobody gets to put a deposit down on a car & then drive it off before they've paid in full or arranged finance that pays for it do they?!? Why the heck would they even dream you would be stupid enough to let them take the Spyder without doing the same here?? :lecturef_smilie:

More fool them if they have a problem with it; in fact, thinking about it a bit more, you might be smart to upgrade your security &/or move the Spyder to another site for a while - if they are dodgy enough to think you'd be suckered in by something as stupid as that scam, then they might even be dodgy enough to try stealing your Spyder... altho Spyders do tend to be a little bit more difficult to move; both practically/physically (thanks to the convoluted start system etc) and also to sell on as anything but parts!

Bike for sale scams

I have a Honda NT700 on Craig's list and I've had two emailed responses asking if I have an off brand CarFax type report. If I express any interest, they give me the web address for this "cheaper than CarFax" report. I fell for it the first time, but then called and complained and was given a full refund.

The spyder is secure in my garage, none of these people have an address for me. Both of the offers I received were over the phone and nobody has come to look at it, I also got the emails and texts about using cheaper than car fax but I just deleted them because I never heard of them

It does sound like you've got it basically under control, only you can never be too careful!! :sour:

Were you aware that there are reverse phone directories that will let anyone get a name & address from a phone number? So IF they are checking you out with illicit intent, they could well already know where you live, & even 'inside your garage' isn't always safe!!

I know of a few people who've had 'bikes stolen from inside their secure & alarmed garages!! A couple of those 'bikes were even chained to a dirty great HT bolt set deep into the concrete floor & secured with a herc alloy chain!! Just about anyone can buy liquid nitrogen these days, chef's use it all the time, & a few drops on any chain will make it shatter like a piece of cheap glass when hit with a hammer!!

Just to give you an idea of how quick & easy it can be, here's the outline of how it HAS HAPPENED to quite a few people selling their 'bikes. All it takes to set it off is a quick phone call to ask about it, maybe even see if they can set up a time to check it out or come around & see the Spyder sometime. A few questions & you both agree on a good time that suits you for them to see it, maybe not even at your home, but during the discussion you've knocked back at least one of the times they suggested cos you aren't gonna be home then so now they know when to visit!! You go out, they go in!! A gentle nudge from their truck on the shed door & they are in there quicker than you'd believe, drop some liquid nitrogen on the chain, one hit with a hammer & it's free, 10 seconds later the Spyder is dragged onto their flat top & it's gone!! Within the hour it's either spare parts or on its way out of the State! And that DOES happen, usually after they've initiated contact via a phone call or bogus attempt to buy; so take care!

Hope it all goes well for you & that you get the $$ you want!
