A friend sent me one of those internet things, this one of old-tyme vehicles. Could these have been the precursor for our beloved transportation mode?

The one on the left shows a V-banked motor with double chain drive - can't tell if it was a simple gear reduction of a transmission between the motor and rear wheel.
