The USS Pueblo Incident - A Historical reference

Jeriatric

Thinks out loud
Quite simply, you may not know the incident happened. It occurred 35(no - 44) years ago, involving 83 American sailors, of which one was killed and the other 82 imprisoned, tortured and humiliated by their North Korean captors.

Incidents between North Korea and the United States continued in 1969, and in April 1969 a North Korean MiG fighter shot down a U.S. Navy intelligence aircraft, killing all 31 men aboard.

April '69 response. Many of us were pulled out of Nam and sent to South Korea....... to sit on our hands for the next month.

When is enough - enough.

Oh, where is the Pueblo today?

The Pueblo is a primary tourist attraction in Pyongyang, North Korea, having attracted over 250,000 visitors

True.

BUT, lets not be too quick into being "tricked" to strike 1st and then finding out the strike was unwarranted, premature and not supported by evidence after the fact.

There is a difference between dumb and stupid....North Korea is not stupid! Just because you taunt the "Big Guy" doesn't mean when he hits you the rest of the world would agree he was "justified" to do so.

Lets not forget the unprovoked ax murders of 1976. Two unarmed American officers savagely beaten and axed by overwhelming North Korean troops while supervising the cutting down of a tree in the JSA.

I remember more then most. I do not however feel this is the place for this subject.20 years in the intel business.just my opinion Oldmanzues

We can talk about packing heat to protect ourselves from our own, but don't bring this up?

Hope we can agree to disagree on how important it may be for people to know what they most likely were not taught in school and have no historical perspective of.

Weapon posts are all 'what if' scenarios. This post represents reality.

Respectfully

:agree: I'm still doing it. And, everytime I hear about the Pueblo I get pretty PO'd. After 25 years Navy I am still firmly convinced we owe them big time for the incident.

Jerbear,

I vividly remember that incident. I was stationed on the USS Hunley and we were in Guam at the time.

I agree!

BUT, as a fellow retired military member and Gulf War Vet, now is not the time for "pay back" for an event that took place then. WE should has responded THEN not now for that incident. Letting a bully get away with punching you without responding will only incite him to do it again and agin! The only way to deal with a bully is on the terms THEY UNDERSTAND AND WILL RESPECT!

:agree: But they still have our ship. The USS Pueblo is a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel that we should take back, by force if necessary.

Yea, I agree we should go in and get them, BUT first when everyone's Son and DAUGHTERS with NO ''exemptions'' get a letter from the President that starts off with ; GREETINGS!

:agree: To all my fellow vets. I was aboard USS Oriskany in Jan 1972, and I, We, did what we have to do.

That's is all I want to say. History will judge us.

The most important to me now is HUMILITY, DIGNITY, and RESPECT. God Bless Us All

Another timely but difficult subject for all of us to ponder. I do see this as going the way the gun threads usually progress. We all have very strong opinions and even though the view point differs, there is much to say on either side.

I also remember the Pueblo incident. I can still see the Captain's face as shown way back when.

The current situation IMO is different and not related to any of the things that happened in the past. We should hope that the military has learned from past mistakes and that what they do now will be thought out and handled appropriate to the situation.

Let's keep it friendly here if possible.

Somebody needs to sit down with North Korean leaders and remind them what happened to the last guy who tried to bluff the world. If you run your mouth long enough, somebody is going to call you on it.

There in is the problem!

Korea keeps talking and painting itself into a corner. And what does a cornered animal do when it feels threatened?

Mike, These are very interesting times to be alive! I might suggest to you that this nitwit has a new toy, and doesn't fully comprehend what'll happen if he takes it off the shelf to play with it... At what point do we stop deferring to China to tighten the leash on him, and resort to doing it ourselves? Personally; I'd rather let it be China's headache... but they've been too silent for too long.

Bob whole heartily agree with you!

Unfortunately we have learned that the media is bias (all of them). And let's not forget the whole WMD debacle!! The safe play is wait (I know it sux) and let NK make a move that will be seen by the rest of the world as "unacceptable". Then Uncle Sam brings the thunder!!!! Let Iran see that if pushed too far, we will respond!
