• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Weight limits

I have been kicking around the idea of buying a Spyder I went and sat on one yesterday and they are amazing. I have a couple of questions though, I am 6'4'' and pushing 400 pounds, I know the weight limit on these things are 440, what are the dangers of riding one over capacity? Anyine throw caution to the wind and ride over weight all the time? I am just asking incase the gf wanted to go riding in the fall, she is not a fan of bikes but loves the trees. Another question is when I sat on the showroom floor model the handle bars hit the top of my thigh when I cranked it all the way over, I have read on here about risers, would this help? Thanks for any help or info, and if there are any big guys who ride spyders and have any advice would take any info thanks.

I know at least one couple that tops 600 riding two up and the only problem they have had is that the stitching keeps pulling out of the seat so they have to replace the seat often..
 
I'm 6'1 and 360lbs.i know with my wife is on bike when you turn your leg hit steering wheel. and you might get air shock failure so you might have buy those yellow fuses. also then move the front shock up to 4 th., so won't bottom out on front wheels. but it's so fun just being out riding.

and last thing might happen your private parts might hit the front of bike. so i buy air hawk for more padding

I would recommend a two up test sit, as well as test drive to see how the ergonomics work for you. The extra weight will have an effect on the shocks and the seat for sure. Did not see what model you were looking at--but there are adjustable handlebars available for the RT's as well as risers for the RS models.
 
Little checking..!!

biggest thing would be the suspension which can be adjusted or modified as needed. The other would be the belt adjustment. Check it regularly. We have several couples exceeding the weight limits with no problem..test ryde will help you get comfortable...:thumbup:
 
You would likely need to alter some components to get it just right. But I think that's true of almost everyone. That's what keeps aftermarket people going! :ohyea:
 
Thank you all for the helpful information. I guess next is just find a price and then find a bike. I like the RT but not sure if I can pony up $18k. Might get a RS instead either way I think the 5 is the way to go no shifting for us first time bike riders.

You still have to shift with the SE...you just don't use your foot and don't have to use the clutch. It is not fully automatic...just electric shift.
 
Yes I know what you mean, it is all but automatic. I read somewhere you don't have to shift down only up? Kind of makes me wonder why they didn't go full automatic anyways.
 
I would look around for a low mileage "11" or "12" RT with the extended BEST warranty. At the Same time I would Call Elka and get there recommendations for a shock package with your weight requirements. This should keep you in your price range and give you a safe stable ride.

NOTE: There are a lot of trade-in's right now on the new "14". Check E-Bay and Craigslist List. And here.

It'll shift down..but you want to do it yourself. If you let the SE5 do it itself it'll shift down well under the power band of the motor.

I'm 6' and 330 - I have had my son on the back with me and he is 180. So we have exceeded the weight limit - I have to agree with the privates smashed on the tupperware - I cannot push the sissy bar far enough back to stop that from happening. :opps:

My daughter gets on the back too - she's a little lighter. Both enjoy the ryde and she tells me to go faster.:shemademe_smilie:
 
I have a related question as we always ride two up and are both gravitationaly enhanced. We have sat on both an RT and ST and it seemed in pure front to back passenger room that the ST was bigger. The ST did not have the passenger back rest, and I have heard that the passenger back rest does decrease the available room. Is this true, and if so has anyone come up with an adjustable passenger backrest for the ST to increase the available total front to back room on the ST with a passenger back rest?
