• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

What does your dealer charge for a rear tire replacement? This much??

I recently reached out to my local Dealer about having the rear tire replaced on my 2022 RT LTD

Here is the breakdown of the labor costs for changing the rear tire:
If you bring in just the rim and tire, it will take 1 hour of labor, amounting to $149.
If you bring the entire bike, it will require 2 hours of labor, totaling $298.


Really? One hour labor to take a tire off the rim and put a new tire on? Since when does this take an hour? Or even 30 mins?
Or Two hours Labor if they take it off the bike and replace the tire and put it back on? :yikes:


And this is if I bring them the tire..

Most dealers go by a book that dictates how many hours to charge for various services. The price variable is based on $$ per hour charged. Some dealers are at the magic price of $300 per hour these days.

My suggestion is to shop around. The hourly rates do vary, unless you have one of the major multi dealerships that have stores all over the state. Then they think they have a captive audience. I note your in MN. Many people used to say the service in Mora was good. Twin City area, might not be so good.
 
Local dealers around me are $325 for R&R/mount balance RT/RTL's. Just to swap out tire/balance, a local indy charges $25

I took my rear wheel and tire in to Sun Sports in Ft Myers a few months ago. $35 to mount and balance.
 
I thought I'd start with the dealer closest to me, but I plan to reach out to Caswell in Mora MN next. It's just crazy the dealer quoted me $150 to just mount and balance a tire... and that's not including putting it back on the Spyder!

Most dealerships have a 1 hour minimum. So you get the full charge even if it only takes 30 minutes.
 
I go to a local shop, just ordered a Quatrac for the rear. I'll take the tire and rim to them ...$40 to mount and whatever the tire disposal fee is.
 
Caswells is your best bet up in Mora. I've taken my Spyders there since 2012. Just bought a new 24 there. They're good people with a good shop. Excellent mechanics also. Call 'em up and make an appointment or just ride up and find out. I recommend them wholeheartedly... Grandpa Pete.

I gotta agree with what a lot of the others have said here, but would like to add, as others have said elsewhere, that many dealers use their price schedules for jobs like this to 'manage' how many of them they get, or maybe even to discourage people from bringing those jobs to them in the first place!! nojoke

So look at that price for what it is - either:
  • they don't really want to do it cos it's a pain in the arse type job, one where they're likely to get in the brown smelly stuff from BRP cos they didn't toe the company line and refuse to fit anything but a Kenda;
  • or maybe because it's very easy to mess up the belt tension &/or rear wheel/belt alignment, and getting that 'not quite right' can mean a number of return visits to sort it that the customer will not expect to pay for, so by charging that much they can discourage you from bringing that sorta job to them and forcing them to take a mechanic who could be better tasked on other more lucrative/less potentially fraught things - and if you're silly enough to agree to pay that much for it, then they'll probably assuage their distaste/frustrations just a little thru the added income!! :p

So, by demanding such a ridiculous price, they're clearly hoping that you/whoever will just walk away, taking that particular job & all its issues/potential hassles elsewhere!! :dontknow:

It's maybe a slightly more subtle 'passive aggressive' version of that old sign that many mechanics used to have hanging somewhere in their workshop:

Job Rates

Leave it here - $10 per hour
Stay & watch - $20 per hour
Stay & help - $50 per hour

I just had Caswell's replace all three of my OEM Kenda's with Vredestein's and they perform FANTASTIC! I had them do the 9,300 mile service and some custom mods and upgrades that I wanted, so I don't have just the tire price, but I'm very happy with all the service and upgrades. I had them add the front tie down eyebolts, a MotoHorn dual horn, and a few other mods.

My Spyder just got a new rear tire, and I'm a lucky guy... I took the stripped-down tire & wheel to a local auto shop, and they removed the old tire/installed the new tire (I supplied) in 10 minutes and charged me $25. They don't have the cone to fit the wheel, so can't balance it, but I have a Marc Parson static balancer.
By far, the labor to remove the rear wheel and reinstall it is the most significant effort for an old guy doing it by himself, but it's doable with the right tools. Keep on riding!

I started buying my tires at Walmart; they will not remove the wheels. They charge $14 to mount and balance the front tires. They said they were unable to balance the rear for some reason so only charged me $10 to mount that one. I use Ride-on sealant balancer liquid on all three so even with no weights on the rear, it is silky smooth.

Car shops can't generally balance the rear, as the 1" axle hole is too small for the auto shop to fit on their balancing spindles.

If you bring in your rear wheel and tire to your local tire shop it will cost you about $20
