Wiring a RT to aftermarket trailer

Blue Star

New member
I am going to get an aftermarket hitch for my RT, and have a question about wiring the RT to the trailer (also aftermarket). From what research I have done I think I have the wire colors correct, and they are:

White (or Black) = ground
Brown = running lights
Yellow = left turn/brake
Green = right turn/brake

My trailer has the four pin connector, and I know I need to get the four pin wire kit. The kit I used for my RS was the Hopkins 46255 Power Taillight Converter.

I believe I can do this as long as I am right on the colors of the wires. Am I on the right track?

Thank you for the help.

:agree:If you have 2013 hitch with a 4 square plug it should wire up easy.:yes:

Converter Connection

The color coding you described is for the output of the converter you are planning on using. I think you are looking for help on installing the converter to pick up the signals from the Spyder.

The factory converter is located on the left rear so I will assume you are doing the same. To wire your converter up you will need to take the back plastic off and remove the tail lights to get access to the wires of the 5 pin connector for each tail light. Follow the table below to connect up the converter to the left 5 pin connector. You only have to connect one wire to the right 5 pin connector to pick up the right turn signal wire,

Your converter Pin out----------------------------- Left 5 Pin connector-------------- Right 5 Pin connector

----Wire color---------- Function ------------------ Wire Color-------------------------- Wire Color

1. White --------------- Ground ------------------- Black
2. Brown--------------- Running Lights ---------- Orange
3. Yellow --------------- Left Turn ---------------- Gray/Pink Strip
4. Red ----------------- Brake---------------------- White
5. Green --------------- Right Turn ------------------------------------------------------ Brown/Yellow strip

Hope this helps

Not sure what aftermarket hitch you plan on using or what trailer you will be towing, but it would be worth considering the new 2013 BRP Hitch with the four wire connector. No module needed. I added a 2013 Hitch and harness to our 2012 RT-S and I like having the factory hitch even though I do understand other hitches can work out fine. I did have LED lights installed on our trailer though.

:agree: The latest version of the hitch/module makes it very simple.

I can help you with the colors , but what type of connectors are you using some BRP ? + some aftermarket .....round , flat , square etc. ....I have a 2014 RT which is similar to yours ( wiring )......I hard wired a flat 5 onto my Hitch to go into my flat 5 for my trailer ( trailer has separate turn sigs. like spyder & are LED )........Mike :thumbup:

YEAH I'M GOING FROM BRP TO AFTERMARKET, THE TRAILER IS A ROUND 5 PIN, IT ALSO HAS SEPARATE TURN SIGS

Also need help

I just purchased a Champion Sidecar Colorado Sport Trailer with a round six contact connector ( has separate turn signals). I will be connecting to a 2014 RT with the OEM hitch and connector.
Any help would be appreciated.

CAN AM TRAILER CONNECTIONS

Hi,

I wired our RT-622 custom so I have the separate turn signals, running lights and reverse lights. Easy to do on the older 622's... not so much on the newer ones.

Anyway, I have the wire colors listed out in this thread. Post#7. http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?65933-trailer-lights-wiring-harness

WHY CAN'T CAN AM MAKE THE TRAILER CONNECTIONS FROM THE BIKE TO THE TRAILER SIMPLE AND UNIVERSAL. IT WOULD SAVE ALOT OF HEADACHES AND FUSTRATION. I THINK THEY MAKE IT COMPLACATED SO THEY CAN MAKE MORE MONEY.
