998 Tinging Noise from Cat Conv

I took my '13 STS into the shop because there was some tinging noise coming from underneath. After persistently annoying them they finally said they thought the baffles on my exhaust were loose. So, they replaced the muffler.

I still believe there is a bit of noise coming from around the Cat. They said that as spyders age the cat gets louder. Is this a true statement?

The noise is a bit of tinging when idling after starting. Upon throttling and when it is really hot from riding I don't hear it. It's loud enough that I notice it with my akrapovic... instead of only hearing the purr of the engine and the exhaust note of the muffler, I hear this annoying tinging.

Any thoughts / guidance is appreciated.

Little checking..!!

have you tried kicking it..:yikes:nojoke if there is something loose it will rattle when thumped with your palm (engine cold) or kicking it. Seeing as many are dumping the cat, hard to say if they get louder much less if its normal. No one..I say no one is gonna replace their cat converter so you could get one for shipping charges (they weigh a ton) cause there are many lying around in garages everywhere...could check bolts on headers and Y connections as well...

same here

Friend of mine in Oz with 13 STL had the same problem ... turned out to be the bracket that holds the muffler on. I shall have to go out and listen to mine now! (no cat, so will take the dog with me lol)

Very good place to start. If you have a dead blow hammer start tapping your exhaust when cold. Hit it from different directions (top/bottom/side) if able. You'll find your 'Tink'!

Hitting with your hand or kicking with your foot will work also, with some possible downsides!

Thank you! There's good and bad - the good was I was able to get the oem muffler dollars applied to the akrapovic and with the rebate, it ended up being free! The bad... I have to diagnose this annoyance, but I'm blessed to have gotten a great muffler, so I can probably deal with it until I replace the cat!!

My only question about replacing cat - with the akrapovic will I then also need a juice box or the like??

Well now you will have to explain to the folks what in the world is a dead blow hammer... picture is similar to a mallet...:roflblack:

Dead blow hammer is rubber heads filled with shot; bb's, lead shot, etc. Made to give a heavy blow without leaving a dent like a hammer would. If you know what a sap is, same thing.

I know what it is but you should see the looks I get when I ask someone to get if from my tool box :yikes:...but now you went and complicated it with a sap...:roflblack::roflblack:

It seems most haven't, altho there are a couple around who claim they needed the juice box too. I'd try it & see, it's not as if you MUST do it instantly or the engine won't run, & it's unlikely to do any damage unless you really thrash it before you get the juice box (if you even need one!) :sour:

Just don't forget to idle the motor for 10-15 mins after fitting the cat eliminator so the computer can learn & cater for the new exhaust profile.
