• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Members with facilities for travelers

I believe this is a good idea. Just don't know if someone is interested in heading this
up and make it happen. I have to many 'irons in the fire'.

So anybody interested? (y)

@Little Blue I don't believe anyone is asking you to "head this up".

I am asking you (and anyone else) for your thoughts about what it would look like, what features you would like to see, the concerns you might have, whether this subforum could be used for this purpose or whether a different subforum is needed, etc. Anything specific.

I appreciate that a few people, like you, have chimed in with their support for the 'concept'.

Not sure what you're saying/trying to convey here, please explain??
Peter, I was investigating for myself whether this subforum (not this thread) might be a place for members to offer their facilities to through travelers. In doing that, I noticed that getting back to this here thread by going to Forums>SpyderLover Rider Map Discussions (https://spyderlovers.com/forums/spyderlover-rider-map-discussions) is not an easy thing to do because the subforum doesn't seem to list threads in any particular order.

So this latest thread we're on now for instance doesn't show at the top of the list (which it would if threads were shown in reverse chronological order) and sometimes when I go to that link, it doesn't show at all and I have to scroll through to find it. And, that's me looking for a thread I know is there. So, I reasoned, a casual visitor looking for information about members along a route they were planning wouldn't know what to look for, even if they look in the "SpyderLover Rider Map Discussions", because those relevant threads wouldn't be apparent.

I'm not saying that this Discussion/Subforum couldn't be used for members to list their facilities. I'm just saying that it might not be worth the effort if members seeking such info can't readily find it. When I searched through this Discussion looking for instances of members offering up their facilities, I found only one, and that was from 4 years ago, I believe. I replied to that post, not expecting the OP to respond, but curious as to how it might work for our purposes, and you immediately deleted it because it was so old.

That's okay because it confirmed my suspicion that posts by members offering their facilities on this discussion have been extremely rare (for whatever reasons) and pretty much ignored (because, I suspect, they're not easily found or understood for their significance).

So, to summarize, in that post I was expressing my opinion that this Discussion group may not in fact be the right place for members to start listing their facilities for through travelers.

@Peter Aawen I am surmising, based on other discussions between us, that moderators are limited as to what they can do to modify the site in any way, such as creating a new discussion group dedicated to members wishing to offer facilities to travelers, or in changing the order in which threads appear to be reverse calendar order. And, you are loathe to ask anything of the webmaster/owner of the site.

In that case, I have another suggestion. In the menu, among the several menu items not being used but still displaying anyway, is a menu item 'Resources'. I have suggested in the past using this to identify vendors that Members might find useful, but that idea was quickly nixed for whatever reason. Maybe, just maybe, we could let Members create posts showing their approximate location and the facilities they are willing to make available to other members who are traveling through the area?

Once again, I have no idea what constraints you may be under, so I'm just asking an innocent question, trying to address a vexing issue that I think the original Rider Map was intended to solve.

Thoughts on the issue?

Pete, I do remember something like what you're suggesting. I've been active on many forums over the years and one of them was Goldwing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) which is not defunct. That association published a "Gold Book" for its members. Each member had the option to include things they had or were willing to do to assist other members. Perhaps something like that could happen here. Not necessarily a book but maybe additions to signature or member information. Then I think it would be useful to be able to look up members by location. Just my thoughts..... Jim

Why do you say this bit?? Doesn't it do that for you?? It does for me, and it's meant to do that - show the most recent post at the top of the index (immediately after the 3 Stickies) in descending chronological order; and for me, that's exactly what it does.

IIRC, that may be something you can set in your preferences, but I believe it should be the same single setting for the entire Forum and all sub-forums, so if this is the only sub-forum that doesn't show the most recent posts at the top of the index list for you, why is this so?? 🤨

I also wonder, is there anyone else out there who has this same issue??

All that said, I think the map itself was a reasonable idea, but it was always pretty hard to put a pin in anywhere near the right spot; most members ended up with a spray of multiple pins and threads in their attempts to get it right, and the map never really worked as it should've anyway, nor was it seemingly ever used that way... AND, you REALLY don't want to tell (or show) the whole world your actual address, let alone tell them what sort of Spyder, tools, gear, etc that you might have at that address; and then post here (or anywhere else on the entire internet!) that you're going away for the weekend/doing a trip, cos that's effectively giving some crim or a whole heap of crims a written invitation to come and clean you out (and Yes, that HAS happened! 😖) So the map thing died a natural death.

That's not to say the idea itself isn't a good one; and for most, a single thread &/or a collection of threads in this or another sub-forum could well work - if those members prepared to help added a simple post using the same format telling everyone their Region/State/Country and detailing what sort of help they're prepared to offer then it should work - the search facility here will search on 'Everywhere' (ie. the entire Forum); it can be restricted to threads alone, not every individual post; it can be restricted to just this forum (ie, this one sub-forum called Spyderlover Rider Map Discussions); or if you've already selected and opened a thread, you can even search just this thread - so theoretically, if members so inclined would use a proforma and follow the instructions about what Region/State/Country detail to include so that the search facility could readily find them, it might work...

However, pulling on both my Moderator's & Devil's Advocate hats here, there have been a number of other attempts to do this sort of thing on other subjects, none of which have been truly successful simply because few other members actually bother, and even fewer of those can be bothered to use a pro-forma or even post in a similar manner to everyone else so that it allows the thread/s to be readily searched by those seeking help/info... And as you've surmised, we, the Mod Team, have little capability to 'modify' ie. add to/adjust the functioning of the Forum itself, at least, not beyond using/managing the facilities that are currently present and in use; and as we found on previous platforms, pulling in even just one or two 'Add-ons' to do things like this firstly opens the door to all sorts of similar requests; and secondly, even one 'Add-on' makes it very hard & more expensive to maintain &/or update the entire platform, something that I don't think any owner willingly does too often!

So, back to the first question... why aren't you seeing the posts in this sub-forum (after the Stickies) in descending order from the most recent??

I don't know why the threads show randomly in this sub-forum for me. I can't figure out how to have it show in reverse chrono order like other threads.

You pretty much confirmed there is no way to get the forum to do what we want it to do. Any workarounds would rely on voluntary self-discipline by the members, so forget that.

I'm dropping this and moving on to other things. Thanks for the response.

...

While we're here, if you look up at the top Right of the first post on this page, or maybe at the top of the first post in the thread, can you see anything in that corner?? I'm particularly looking to know if you can see a little 'Filter' button with a down arrow alongside it up there, probably in the line under the 'Watch' button and (maybe) the three dots (...) followed by a down arrow that shows you've got more options available in a drop down menu...

If it's not just above the top of the first post on the page/in the thread, maybe try going to the index page for this sub-forum - SpyderLover Rider Map Discussions?? If you can find it above the thread/posts OR above the index listing for this sub-forum, please click on it.

Clicking on that 'Filter' button should give you a pop-up menu, with a few options, but the one we are particularly concerned about here should be the bottom line, where it has a 'Sort by:' section, with a couple of boxes that SHOULD show 'Last message' in the left hand box, and 'Descending' in the right hand box. If you can find it, what does yours show??

You can check out the other options if you wish, but if you want to see the most recent post at the top of the listing, followed by older posts in 'last post date order', you need it to show 'Last message' in the left hand box, and 'Descending' in the right hand box of that 'Sort by:' block. ;)

Does that fix your display order concern in this sub-forum??

Peter, I have done as you directed in the second suggestion (above) before and tried it again just now. Those were the proper selections all along, but it's not doing the reverse chrono sort. It doesn't even show the last thread at the top.

Dunno, mate. Maybe it only works in the Southern Hemisphere. Just kidding.

Haaaang on!! 😳

I just looked at your screen dumps a bit closer, and if you do too, you'll see the first three threads shown have a little pin displayed to the right of a padlock on the far right of your screen dumps - on the actual screen, those pins will be between the padlock and the heading 'Replies:' which is in the third column from the far right of the screen - that pin means those threads are Stickies - they are 'pinned' or stuck in place at the top of the index listing for the sub-forum; while the padlock means the thread is now locked and you can't reply to it. So as shown in your screen dumps, the first Three threads on the first page of the Index for this 'SpyderLover Rider Map Discussions' section are fixed, they won't move from the top of the index listing even if someone adds a new post to a thread below those, cos it's only all the threads listed below those three which will appear in descending order of the most recent post in the threads. ;)

As I'm posting this, the most recent post made in any thread that's not a Sticky in this sub-forum just happens to be:

  • a post in this 'Members with facilities for travelers' thread that you started a few days ago; then the most recent post before that...
  • is the reply from @pegasus1300 in the 'Is the rider map functioning?' thread that you started late last month...

And THAT is exactly what your screen dumps show! (at least, from what I can see of them here - I'm not getting the entire width of the screen/page... 🤨)

So I think you are just mis-reading the index listing, maybe looking at the Stickies too, &/or the dates the threads were started instead of the date of the last post in those threads; and the order the threads as shown in your screen dimps is actually correct for the way you have those filters set, as it is displaying threads in order by looking at THE LAST/MOST RECENT POST in any thread, and then sorting in descending order for the most recent posts made before that - it's not working off the date the thread was started, it's working off the date the last post was made in any thread! ☺️

If you want to check that this is what's actually happening, the next thread in the index listing will be:
  • a thread started by @Dragracer in late Oct 2024 with the title 'Dragracer on the map - Lecanto, Fl', with the last post in that thread being made by @Dasmoetorhead a day later; then
  • there's a thread started by @GJetson about 10 Oct '24 (your date might not be the same as mine, cos here in Oz, we are that much ahead of you lot!) with GJetson as the title and no replies; then
  • a day before that, a thread by @Spyderrg with the title 'Spyderrg - Home' and no replies; then
  • around 21 Jul '24, there's a thread started by @DSpider76 with no replies; and so on...

Look at the dates the last posts in each thread were made in the right hand column of the index - THOSE are the dates that determines how threads are listed in descending order from the most recent to the oldest, but that sequencing only kicks in AFTER the Stickies are listed at the top of the index first. So if the threads are shown in the order above and continue descending in order of the last post made in each thread from there, as they are in my index listing and I suspect, just about every other index, including all of yours and most other members here, then I reckon that there's a good chance that it's all working properly as it is. (y)

Make sense??

In this world of motorcycle riders, there's a worldwide group out there called Bunk a Biker. Google: "BUNK A BIKER RULES AND GUIDELINES." Over the last five years I have used this at least a dozen times from Maine to California, Ohio to Florida, in Canada from Ontario to Nova Scotia and lots of places in between. It's bikers hosting bikers. There's no charge. You just have to be traveling on your bike. Heck, the rules say you can be driving your car, pulling a trailer WITH YOUR BIKE ON IT and you can use it. Some hosts offer indoor accommodations, some offer camping space, and some offer both. Others offer information on their area and/or mechanical help, but no hosting. It's been really nice and it's crazy how welcoming people are. There are rules and guidelines for both the Bunker and the Host, but it really works. No one has ever turned me down because I was riding a Spyder. I've traveled by myself, one time with my wife, and on two different trips with a friend. Research it, you'll be glad you did.

What an excellent suggestion! Thanks for that.

https://bunkabiker.com/ is the legacy website with a wealth of archived material

https://www.bunkabiker.net/ is the contemporary website for hosts and riders to match up

https://www.bunkabiker.net/map is the interactive map (linked to from both the above websites) of hosts (in 78 countries!)

I'll definitely be using this resource for future planned trips.

Thanks again.

I remember signing up years ago for those Spyder help pages. I have been active here since 2015. I don't know what happened to that page, probably lost in the transition. I am also signed up on the bunkabiker page. With advancing age and infirmaties I may have to remove myself from that page. BTW I have never had an inquiry from that group, the list here, or the one posted in Ventures.org.
My list of the posts here lists them oldest to`newest. Newest at the bottom
