• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

    parking brake

:agree: If you're on a steep enough hill you HAVE to use a little oomph on the parking brake or it won't hold... The key to a smoothly functioning parking brake is keeping it clean and lubed. It's a PITA, but everything I've ever loved, driven, flown or ridden that was worth keeping required...

    parking brake

My wife ("our" Spyder's actual owner/ryder) only weighs 120 lbs or so. If Spydie started rolling on a hill there is no way she could stop it. Unfortunately, that means it is sometimes hard for her to release the parking brake while aboard. I suggested she leave Spydie in gear AND apply the...

    Overheating - Redux

AFAIK, no one knows how the number of bars on your temp gage correlates to actual engine temp. And even if we did, what's "too hot?" The SOG is mute on this subject. Your only guidance is not to sit in traffic with the fan running during break in, and to shut the engine down if the computer...

    87 vs 93 octane

Actually, you're a little turned around; the higher octane fuel REQUIRES higher heat to ignite. Therefore, one would use a higher octane fuel for a hotter-running engine, not to make it run cooler. Here's why: The octane rating of a fuel is a measure of its resistance to autoignite -- before...

Which checklist are you referring to? Regards, Mark

    Harley offers new 3-wheeler

I love the article's description (coming from H-D I'm sure) of the "Harley designed" components comprising the rear suspension and drive system. Last year, as part of the festivities at Sturgis during the annual bike rally I toured the Lehman trike factory in Spearfish, SD...

The Alamo Spyder rides at last !

First, CONGRATS! You're gonna love ryding "her." Second, I would be very careful about sitting in traffic during the break in. Your engine is very tight until all the parts wear into each other. That means the friction on all those tight parts will make more heat now than after break in...

    initial oil consumption

As Arte Johnson used to say, "Veddy Eentrestink." I wonder if it had more to do with the engine finally breaking in than the switch to different oil. I can't imagine why a different oil would make that much difference... :dontknow: Regards, Mark

    initial oil consumption

Hmmmmmm. I think you mentioned in another thread you switched to Shell Rotella T 5W40 Synthetic and your oil consumption ended? Regards, Mark

How much oil did you add between changes? Regards, Mark

    Continued struggle with belt tracking

Lamont, I don't know if you're experiencing any balance problems with your new rear wheel, but I noticed the yellow dot on your tire isn't aligned with the valve stem. I also noticed LOTS of weight nearly aligned with the red dot. The yellow dot is the LIGHTEST part of the tire (measured by...

Putt-Putt, I'm curious, have you noticed any oil in your airbox? Regards, Mark

    initial oil consumption

I suppose if you checked enough times and got the same indications you could learn to "trust" a reading not taken by the book. Regards, Mark

I knew you would understand and take my comment for exactly what it was. Respect can be shown in many ways my friend -- I too am glad to make your acquaintence. Regards, Mark

    initial oil consumption

That's assuming a "cold" check is the same for every machine, and that each machine reacts the same for a "cold" check. And then you would need to know how long after shutting down it takes for the oil to drain out of the resevoir back to the engine. Then what happens if the outside temp is 40...

    initial oil consumption

Right, that's what I thought too. That's why I think NOT following the SOG recommended oil level check procedure can lead to inaccurate readings -- and an overfilled oil sump. Some (including me) have speculated an overfilled oil sump might lead to the excess oil winding up in the airbox via...

    initial oil consumption

Then why does the SOG specify to ensure the engine is at operating temp before checking the oil? Regards, Mark

    Wasting time...

Ummmm... he was the smart one? :doorag: "Sir! I had Commander Heatherly in my sights; he saw me move in for the kill. He then proceeded below the hard deck. We weren't below 10,000 for more than a few seconds. I had the shot... there was no danger, so I took it!" Sorry, you can't throw a...

    initial oil consumption

I wonder if a 30-second run after sitting for an hour was enough to get it to "normal operating tempurature." I know the SOG doesn't specify, but most report seeing three to four bars on the temp gage under normal circumstances. I would think that would be a good standard for "normal operating...

    initial oil consumption

OK, I usually check the oil in Wifey's Spyder after we get back from a ride. Last time I checked (last weekend) level was right at the full mark on the dipstick. BTW, her Spyder hasn't used ANY oil since I did the break in and initial oil change (2,000+ miles). I checked Wifey's Spyder last...
