• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Have a shift problem both in auto down shift and manual, hangs up in 3 rd have to goose throttle to get it to down shift when stopped, back to dealer for the second time for this first time said it was a bad ECM and throttle body, this time said my oil tank was low half a quart, also said that the pressure was low due to low oil level. Was serviced a month ago , no leaks no smoke so where did it go. Again not a good answer. So does this sound right, does it burn oil. And what is a no bs answer to when to change the oil . My wing I used am soil and ran it for 10 k before a change and it did not burn oil. I can't seem to find any one at the dealer who can answer my questions. Is the oil level that critical on these bikes I need some motor head advice I'm a bit uneasy with the service I'm getting. Please advise thanks huck my spyder is a 2012 rt limited with 5100 miles on it

I have a 2012 rs ....and yes they like to use some oil. In 3000 miles it can use up 2qts of oil. I try to check mine every 500 miles and can be down a quarter of a quart. I have had it over a half quart low once before I knew to check it every 500 and never had a shifting problem!

The short answer is yes, oil level is critical, should be checked at least every 500 miles.

Reading you'll likely find worth your time.

Yes, oil level is critical but, 1/2 quart low simply cannot cause a shifting problem. The oil tank is a where the oil is stored and unless it is really overfilled or very low, the oil tank is just where the oil is held when it is not lubing the motor internals. Apparently, some dealers send bikes out a bit short on oil and most here recommend running the engines a little low to prevent sending oil into the air cleaner.

A half quart is quite a bit, and can cause problems with shifting. Did adding oil cure the problem? 10K on an oil change is quite a bit, too. Do you have the long transmission filter or the original short one? The short one plugged easily, and caused shifting problems. The new one is only meant to go the 4,600 that BRP recommends. Oil is cheap, I would not stretch things that far. Just my personal opinion. I will not jeopardize a $30,000 machine for $60 worth of oil. I also have a hunch that some of these shifting problems that involve low oil levels are complicated by weak springs in the hydraulic shift module. I suspect the combination does not allow enough shift pressure. That is just a theory...not proven.

As mentioned above, low oil can cause shifting problems. I would recommend following the BRP :spyder2: recommendations for oil change intervals, as well as checking the oil about every 500 miles. Some machines do use oil.
