• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Anyone used/using Mobil 1 Racing 4t 10w-40?

Anybody ever used it? Any issues with the weight? Used it in my Ninja without any problems.Any other suggestions besides BRP.
 
:dontknow: I'm about as ignorant about oil, as a hog is about The Sabbath...
...But aren't there specific ratings, that specify whether or not an oil is suitable for use in bikes?
Does Mobil 1 carry those designations?

Used it in my Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Recently used Amsoil in my Victory and am planning on using Amsoil in my spyder.
 
I will have to look when I get home. Sadly, no Spyder or manual with me.

The oil he is listing is a Mobil 1 for bikes
Think there is 5w40 recommended for the summer 10w40 is a thicker grade not. Whole lot but I thicker . I haven't had mine long enough to experiment with oil in my bike. Maybe someone will chime in that has

I used it for about a year in My GS BUT changed to Castrol RS 4T 10w40 Because its JASO Rated MA2 which is better for the clutch!
 
I've used Castrol for years in cars without problems. I shall see about it for the Spyder.

Some people have used it with no problems. Others reported clutch difficulties. BRP prohibits use of SM oils. I personally would avoid it unless I was 100% sure. There are other alternatives that are not as questionable.

No problem with using 10W-40. Most of us do, even though it is slightly above the recommended winter viscosity. If I lived above the arctic circle I might think differently, but for most of us it works just fine.

You might want to check out Valvoline Synthetic 10-40 motorcycle oil. It meets all requirements and is Jaso Ma2 rated. I lab tested it once in my previous RT, and it tested out almost as well as Amsoil. You can find it in most Walmarts. And its far better than the Castrol Blend cycle oil.

I am not busting your butt on this, but can you explain further where to find or why is SM rated oil prohibited.

This is copied directly from the manual, I have made obvious the BRP statement that says or higher classification. Seems to me, the minimum acceptable is an SG rated oil. SM would well exceed the minimums?


Use the XPS 4-STROKE SYNTH.
BLEND OIL (SUMMER) (P/N 293 600
121) or a 5W40 semi-synthetic (minimum)
or synthetic motorcycle oil
meeting the requirements for API service
SL, SJ, SH, SG or higher classification.
Always check the API service
label on the oil container.


Again, I am curious, not starting anything. My main reason is my plans are to use Mobil 1 motorcycle oil. But may use Rotella if acceptable.

It should really just come down to if the oil has friction modifiers or is labeled "energy efficient".

If you will notice the OP has a GS/RS model spyder with a 991 series engine. In all owners manuals for this engine there is a warning not to use SM rated oils because clutch damage will occur. There are lots of choices for oil so why use one that manufacturer says not to use!! As for Rotella T6 oil I tried that on recommendation of other folks in my 09 GS and the clutch started slipping.

In regards to you and your 2014 RT with a 1330 ACE engine. Your owners manual has no such restriction. So what is correct for the OP may not be correct for you.

I don't understand why folks seem to want to use ANYTHING, but the oil that they can get from BRP.
They offer a full synthetic oil, and a blended version...
Was it something that they said??? :yikes:
 
Not to jump into an oil thread, but that oil is fine for use in the Spyder. It has the same basic ratings as the Amsoil that is the favored product by many owners, myself included.

I believe what BRP is referring to in the manual about prohibiting SM grade oils is a direct reference to automotive SM oils, which was the automotive industry standard from 2004-2010, and not oils approved for wet clutch applications, like the referenced Mobil 1 product. :f_spider:

BTW, the SM rating was susperceded by the SN rating in 2010 by the API.

See post #13 above. BRP clearly states in the owners manual for all but the 2014 RT...

To avoid damaging the
clutch, do not use a motor oil meeting
theAPI serviceSMor ILSACGF-4
classification. Clutch slippage will
occur.

You can't get much clearer than that. Use any oil you want, but don't come crying to BRP for warranty repairs if you use an oil that they specifically prohibit and you subsequently experience clutch failure.

My apologies people. After rereading the original post and replies I was asking myself, where or how did I not see it was a non 1330 topic or noted in the ops signature.

I realized my error, I had replied to posts viewed from the "What's New" method and did not realize I was in this category.

So yes, disregard the statement to use SM rated oil made by myself.
