Battery Tender Plus for the Winter...thanks Scotty

Shoutout to Scotty for this recommendation.

Today I attached the harness for the battery tender plus on my Spyder. I ran the short wires back under the seat where I now have a piece of duct tape holding them down...I would've gone for a velcro solution but I couldn't find my velcro...drats...when I find/get some, I'll go for this solution...

Scotty recommended the harness method with the tender plus and I'm very grateful. This setup is awesome to keep your bike ready to go all winter long...I hope to get out whenever there is a break in the weather (rode 100 miles last week), but you never know...

So, I'll keep the battery good to go and will run the engine about 15 minutes a week just to keep the fluids going...

If you don't have a battery charger, I highly recommend the delco battery tender plus...you can get it at Amazon for $40.00 delivered (Prime Amazon member)...it's money well-spent...get the extension cable as well if you need it to stretch across your garage...

Did you mean Deltran Battery Tender Plus? They are the Mfg. unless they are now private labeling their unit for Delco??
Another point to remember when using this unit.....always disconnect from your wall outlet first before making or breaking the connection at your Battery Tender Harness. When I took delivery of my Spyder 10 months ago the battery was really never brought to a full charge condition, and since the charging system is a magneto the bike's charging system was slow in bringing the battery up to full charge. From day one the battery tender was hooked up, and day by day, the time after a ride from charge to stand by mode went from a few hours to now a couple of minutes.I have used these chargers for years and battery life is really extended!Gotta keep them on 24/7 when not riding to get the full benefit of life extension.

Why? Inquiring minds want to know as I have never done this.

.

Could eliminate potential sparks when breaking the connection if the battery tender is in a higher amp charge mode? :dontknow: Only thing I can think of.

I can buy that. I use Tender Jrs. so no high amps there.

I was looking at them today. What is the difference between the battery tender jr and the battery tender plus? Whats best for Spyder?
Thanks,
Tina

I've used the Jrs. for a long time on my Roadster, bikes and lawnmowers. My understanding is the only difference is output amperage... a Jr. just takes longer to charge a battery if it is really low... which rarely happens to me... because I use them regularly on both bikes.

Whoops....guess it is deltran...sorry...got the 'd' name messed up...

The unit is what they call 'spark free'...I'd assume this means that there can be no problems with connecting/disconnecting...however, I do connect to the bike first, then connect to the wall...as far as disconnecting, that's good to go as well...

They're both fine...I got the tender plus...40.00 delivered from Amazon Prime...comes with alligator clamps and the harness (must have!)...unit is hooked up and working great now...

I guess I never realized you should connect to the battery connecter first. I have always plugged the wall part first on my quad (for the past 2 years) and never had a spark or any other issue. BUT I will do it right going forward:2thumbs:

I hooked the quick connect directly to the battery and fed the connector up thru the postive hole under the seat. The "pocket" is a perfect shape to hold the connector and being quick at hand.

I can see one BRP designer telling another one; "You keep working on that damn burn spot on the muffler and leave me alone. I'm trying to figure out where to put a pocket for a battery tender connection". At least one of them got it right.

I use a powerlet plug on the end of my charger, so I always plug in the bike first. If I drop the plug, it can short, and blow the battery charger fuse. Don't ask how I know.

The Battery Tender Plus is a larger box, with both inlet and outlet cords. It charges at a higher rate and has a bit more sophisticated battery maintenance mode. The Tender Jr. is a transformer that plugs into the wall (like and electronics charger), with just an output cord. I have several, and they work fine. Other good box-type chargers are the Accumate and Optimate units. I also have several of these. I would recommend any of these units, just avoid the automotive type chargers. They are tougher on batteries, even if the amperage is low, and they say "for cycles". Different charging curves, I'm guessing.
