My wife and I sold our Scala Rider Teamset Pro headset system recently. At first we were going to upgrade helmets with integrated bluetooth until we found out the systems Nolan and HJC use are super pricey and the battery life on the Hawk helmet system is only 4 hours talk time. Since we ride 2-up on the RT-S, we decided to upgrade to the Q1 Teamset for bluetooth music streaming from our phones, music sharing and FM radio with RDS. Another huge draw for me was the ability to plugin earbuds without haviong to buy a new clamp and that stupid cord that you need for the earbuds on the Sena SMH10. You simply plug right in to the clamp on the Q1. I found a new set for a good price on ebay and was excited when it arrived. I fully charged them, upgraded the firmware and spent the hour installing them into our helmets.
That's when the disappointment set in. The boom microphone the units come with (despite the owner's manual seemingly indicating that the corded and boom mic are included and they don't) are flimsy and held into place with pretty cheap Velcro. The old Teamset Pro had a boom mic that you could easily bend down and outside the full face helmet to make it easier to put the helmet on. These aren't able to do that anymore unless you pull the mic and boom completely off where it sticks to the helmet.
Immediately we noticed interference before we even activated the intercom. A static along with digital sounding interference/distortion could be heard and then it'd go away. I assumed it was so sort of random issue and we headed out. The sound was even worse on the road. The clarity was garbage in intercom mode. The static and digital noise made each person sound like they were mumbling and muffled. We leave our intercom set to ON all the time and when we'd stop talking, sometimes the static and noise would stop but then start up again even if we weren't talking and at a dead stop. I was pretty furious this "upgrade" was turning out to be a huge bust.
When we got home I went ahead and paired it with my phone and tried the music streaming and phone calls via cell phone. Guess what...perfectly clear! I even thought maybe it was our two new earbuds causing the problem so we used the default disc speakers provided and intercom audio still sucked. So, I fired off an email to Cardo support but never got the response within 48 hours as promised. I then call and get a guy who has me preform the "full reset" on the devices. At this point I blatantly ask, "Should I receive the same quality intercom audio as the old model Teamset Pro?". He had an emphatic "Yes". Well the reset did squat. The intercom audio had the same noise and distortion as before.
So, I am returning that set. In the interim, I bought another Q1 set from Amazon (I'm a Prime member). I got it yesterday and fully charged them along with the firmware upgrades. This time I wasn't an idiot and didn't install them into the helmets. I plugged our earbuds in and tested the microphones on intercom mode and the same static and distortion but only in that mode!!! Now, I get to return these as well.
I'm done with Scala. I was a huge fan based on my experience with the Teamset Pro but this new Q1 is garbage. I'm tempted to try the G9x Powerset but I'm afraid since it also has the new boom microphone system the Q1 has, the rest of the base hardware and software will be the same. I'd love to move to the Sena 20s since it'll accept earbuds directly but it's not out yet and may not be available by the time Spyderfest happens.
Does anyone have any experience with intercom quality in the Scala G9x?
