Carrying a small dog with us...?

Greetings all:

I tried to search this topic, but did not really get much other than the rig for Teddy. (This seems to work well as long as you are alone)

I'm wondering if anyone has a novel way to carry their favourite pet on a Spyder RT. I'm looking a solution that would allow us (as in two people) to also bring our little buddy along. He is a Yorky and only weights 5-lbs, so weight should not be an issue.

Just so everyone knows were I'm coming from - The accountant is slowly warming to the idea of a Spyder RT... But I know before I even begin to look at them, I better have a plan on how to bring our little guy along or the bank will be closed and the Spyder plan will be toast. So with that in mind, does anyone know of a good way to modify an RT to allow this. My early thinking might be to cut a hatch (mount small windshield) in the back trunk or something. I'm hoping this is something that might have been talked about in the past and someone has a good idea. My second thinking would be to modify a trailer, but i'm not sure the "accountant" would be happy to have him so out of reach....

This has become a Very debated subject on here lately, so PLEASE, be EXTRA CAUTIOUS

There are a few other ryders that do ryde 2up with their pooch & you maywant to contact them for their suggestions/experiences. Bob Denman, draboo & PadreSpyder are 3 that readily come to mind. Just remember, how would you feel if the worse happened to your best friend in an accident, cause accidents do happen. I know personally what I choose to do, & Teddy did have one accident when we first started ryding together, but here we are 2 years later & over 30,000 miles of smiles for the lil guy & I wouldn't have it any other way. Just be forwarned, even with such a small dog, you will be greatly limited where you can go with a pet. Good Luck & enjoy, it CAN be done :yes:

I was not aware that this was a "hot-button issue" around here. For me, I'm just looking for possible ideas. Not to get into a debate on the carrying of pets on a bike. I have owned many bikes over the years and completed 2 complete tours of North America along with most of Europe at different times. So I'm very aware of bikes and the inherent dangers that they bring.

You should have worded it this way, I want to ride with my dog on the Spyder,
Should i use 87 octane or 93 octane, If you realy want to hot button. :roflblack:

All kidding aside there are quite a few who ride with their pets and from what i understand they would have it no other way, You'll soon get good info from them. :thumbup::thumbup:

As Cincyspyder said, this has been a well worn subject of late.:bdh: I personally do not go anywhere without my Jack Russell, Jenny. She has traveled through 24 states for many many miles.
I have traveled with her alone and two up. If you want to PM me I will be glad to tell you the two setups I use.

I'll second that motion. I would not ride with a pet or a small child, but I won't argue with those that understand the risks and wish to do it, any more than I'd pee in the beer of someone who rode without a helmet.

Look at Draboo's rig. That Inspector Gadget rack and a carrier works well.

Another alternative....

Here is our doggy carrier. Our dog is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.... 22 lbs. Note the removable rain/sun cover and the incorporated back rest.....Take a look... Len

This was developed as a R&D project to test an idea. It was not actually used other than for a brief trip down the block and back. As you can see, more work is needed. Zeus seemed to enjoy the ride, but it is difficult to keep an eye on him while riding. I would not recommend this solution. For one thing, it takes up too much valuable space. The rear trunk might be better. In that case you might have to set up a video camera.

The input and ideas will at least allow me to begin me journey on how to deal with this.
Sorry if I came into this issue a little late and was not aware that there had been a big discussion about it in the past.

I can see some of the ideas put forward give me the ability to have the confidence to know that a resolution to this issue can be achieved...

To Dave - Thanks very much for the PM and long phone conversation... It was GREAT to access your knowledge on both the Pet issue and the issue of Spyders in general.
