• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Finely a good and cheap HID solution!

I lurk a lot and this is my first post. A local motorcycle shop made a harness setup for my Spyder. I was tired of the stock halogen bulbs and wanted HID lights but refused to pay the insane $1300 for a factory kit. I asked them to build me a kit and it worked so well they will be releasing a aftermarket HID kit with step by step instructions! A&R has been fantastic throughout the whole process, I cant stress enough the level of satisfaction they made sure I experienced while they were working on my bike. They even threw a few LED marker bulbs in so the markers matched the HID lights.

I know they will be releasing the kit shortly. I think they are going to be offering it for around $150 with a warranty and step by step instructions. I have had there HID kits on every bike I have owned so far, had to have them on my Spyder. Keep a lookout, I will let you guys know when it is released, until then here is the website you can browse through.

(also cross posted on another Spyder board, I am just so excited about these HIDs!!)

:welcome: Thanks for sharing the HID information. I had them on my 2008 GS and liked them a lot. I went for the factory kit and factory wiring harness.

There were some earlier posts that said there were electrical problems if the factory harness was not installed.

Let us know how your's work out. It would be nice not to spend $1,300 plus for two bright light bulbs.

The Xenon Depot kits are plug and play for $120 and user installable......and they're a site sponsor.....

These are the ones I will be getting for my RT. Putting a list of additional mods for my winter project. So far it will be HIDs (Zenon Depot) and the replacement of the analog meters. :D

I dont see a spyder specific kit ... am I missing it?

Are they custom kits built for the spyder. A&R had a very tough time with the retaining clips ... they said they will be offering the kit with some special clips. After seeing some of there other instructions when I did my r1 HIDs I was very impressed.

Kits don't need to be spyder specific as the plugs are all industry standard.

For the main headlights:

VDP-4k-H7
H7 4300k Volt Digital+ Xenon HID Conversion kit
(You can go with other temp ranges - 6,000, etc. but the 4300K is closest to white and technically provides the most 'seeable' light)

Fogs:
VDP-4k-H8
H8 4300k Volt Digital+ Xenon HID Conversion kit
(This may come marked as H11 - but they fit the H8 socket just fine)

The retaining clips take about 60 seconds each to modify to fit the HID bulbs. :

Is that kit low beam only?

True, A&R said they are going to be offering a special kind of clip with there kits to make them easier to install. Also, the step by step instruction and free tech support is nice. So far they look great .. I will have to do a write up after I go ride with them a week or two.

The Spyder doesn't use a dual filament bulb. It uses a shutter to cover the upper part of the beam on low (in North America).

I just looked at the link that was posted in this thread .... The relay harness kit is $199. That is what I got installed and they will be selling for around $150.

I am not trying to bag on a forum sponsor, I just want to be clear that this is like the XT-4K-H7 Xtreme HID kit not the lower priced VDP-4k-H7 Volt kit. Another thing I noticed is that the Xtreme HID kit didn't come with the LED marker lights ... Those come with the A&R kit.

There is no need for a relay harness as the headlight circuit is already on a relay. Makes no sense to have a relay power a relay to turn lights on. Another reason I went with the lower priced volt kits.

I've installed many of the 'volt' kits from XenonDepot and they are the exact same kits as other 'high end' ones I've seen sold online. Had mine installed for a good 35,000 miles and no problems.

When kits first were out that were 'spyder specific' a couple companies were getting $400 for them -- which was a deal compared to the $1200 that BRP was charging. BRP lowered their price to around $800 now - which is still very expensive --- but their kit includes new light fixtures, etc..... so it's a much more involved kit.

I've used the XenonDepot kits for a couple years now - way before they were a site sponsor--- but didn't post where I got them out here out of respect to another dealer that was a site sponsor at that time. Now that XD is a sponsor I'll post about their kits.

Always good to have options - glad you found one you like.

Its not a relay powering a relay. It is a relay connected to the battery. They told me that if you do a direct connect kit like the volt kit that when you start the HID lights there is a larger power draw that weakens and crack the plastic clips on the harness. I guess if you want to risk the longevety of your headlight harness that is your call, I for one would rather spend that money on gas to put in my Spyder :)

I mean no disrespect to Xenon Depot, I didn't even know they were a sponsor when I made the thread. I am sure that they will agree that a relay harness kit is a better option than a direct connect.

They also sell units with the relay kit--- but it just isn't necessary. I have the relay kit from one of them sitting in a box. There's no need to wire all the way back to the battery - the OEM spyder lighting leads are perfectly capable on handling the HID's. Doing so would still require using the OEM relays to turn on the HID relay which would then supply power to the lights -- makes no sense to do this. I usually end up leaving all 4 HID's on and don't have problems starting. I have no idea what plastic clips they're referring to--- but I've had zero problems with 35,000 pretty hard miles on my HID's....
