FRONT TRUNK HINGE PROBLEM

Used the front trunk today and it was loose -

Checked where the lid joins the hinge at the bottom only to find the plastic
has broken on both sides of the lid - Lid now loose

This appears to be a weak point with 4 bolts going through plastic
the plastic is unable to hold the weight

The wind may have caught the lid so I don't think I will be able to make a
warrant claim

I intend to make a metal bracket each side to strengthen the lid

Has anyone had the same problem and if so - How did they overcome it

Others may want to check to see if the plastic is cracking or even broken
where the Lid joins the hinge

My Spyder is a RT -S 2010 Model purchased in Dec 2010

I have the 2010 RT also and I have had the front trunk lid off and on again to get it wrapped and used it extensively (18000 miles mostly long distance travel).. The lid has held up well and I could see it clearly when I had it off - No cracking or problems .. actually seemed quite strong.

If it was me

OK got 15k on my 2010 RT...without a problem and that thing gets open and shut MANY times...
I would be calling yours a warranty issue...:yikes:

Ref - My Trunk lid problem

Just had the Trunk lid replaced under warranty - Have to wait for a new badge Dealer had a problem getting old one off
(Well stuck and thin metal so bends easily)

May consider putting on my own badge - Not sure whats available believe the existing BRP Badge is 2 1/2" size

Glad to hear that it was a warranty deal! You didn't by any chance take a picture or two of the damaged lid; did you?

Here are some photos of the Damaged Funk Lid

I had to make a temp repair using JB Weld - and a piece of plastic (The only piece I could find as I was away on Holiday)

I think even after my temp repair the lid was still only being held on at 2 points

Suggest others check theirs from time to time

:yikes: Wow! I wonder what would have made THAT happen? If you were at speed, the the lid and your Spyder decided to part ways it could have been a real eye-opener for sure! :yikes:

Stainless Steel bracket to strengthen the Funk lid at the hinge point

In my original post I mentioned I intended to make some metal brackets to strengthen where the Front Trunk Lid is attached to the Hinge
This would ensure the lid could not become loose as the plastic joining the Lid to the hinge is not that thick and in my case broke

Having got a replacement Lid C/O BRP Under Warranty - I have now made some Stainless Steel brackets to support the lid

I have posted some photos to show what the brackets look like

(NOTE) - 1 picture shows the plastic used on the existing Trunk lid before my brackets are installed

I decded to drill through the Lid as this is the Thickest part of the lid and have place some Stainless Steel dome head bolts with S/S Washers + Rubber
washer underneath through to the new brackets

You will notice at persent I don't have a BRP Badge, still awaiting a replacement but used a polished disc so it did not look odd
I had considered replacing the S/S Dome bolts with LED Number Plate bolts which could light up the BRP Badge when it comes - Not sure on this
idear yet

The Front trunk Lid fits as before with no problems in operation or alignment

Hope others find this useful

Very nice work. No problem with mine as yet but will keep your pictures in the spyder repair folder just in case.

Took mine in to be fixed today. Dealer and BRP agreed to provide a new hitch assembly. Because there was some paint damage when opening and closing, BRP has agreed to have some painting done. Bottom line is that they'll be disassembling today, sending to a paint vendor to have painted and then assembling later on this week. All under warranty. "Thanks BRP and Seminole Power Sports of Sanford, Florida".
