OK got this smarter (wayyyyyy smarter!!) than me phone. Found an app for Garmin No America ($50)...anyone got an opinion??? Oh wait these are Spyderlovers, we all have an opinion...that's what makes it sooooo great. Happy New Year everyone...cannot believe still able to ride...it was 47 and blue skies ... unbelievable but I'll take it!!!!:yes:

I have not used the garmin app on my iphone 4. I tend to look for free apps and there is a GPS app called Waze you may check out. It allows users to upload info about traffic, weather, police, ect and will give you an update if you are in the area where someone posted something.

On the RT, I use my old harley Road tech zumo.

$50 is high for a phone app, but you would be hard pressed to find a garmin for that price. I don't know if it is worth that price, but that is just me.

I purchased the Tom Tom version for $50 lifetime and it seems to update frequently and works quite well.

Navigon it will B Next ?...how to mount Iphone on dash for visibility

Going to give Navigon a go....since I have the Lifeproof case figure my iphone is 100% waterproof....but now want to mount on dash...don't want to mount on center handlebars...looking down even briefly is not my comfort level when ryding...I already have a 12v plug in installed...thank you so much for all the help. My goal is to have this all in place before I leave for Spyderfest in April...Christmas is done in murphybrown's house...so boxing all up...maps are coming out....so far Spyderfest 2012, BRP Event Durango, CO and Nova Scotia are on the goin' getter done in 2012...with lots of ryding in between....of course I'm not getting excited!!!:yes:

Navigon Balks At Mapping NJ to FL Route

I like the Navigon App as well but recently when I tried to get a route from NJ to Daytona, FL, I got this message:

The route is too long for the selected route option. Please choose a different route option.

I pretty much have the default values set. My Route settings are:

Route Profile: Motorcycle
Type of Route: Optimum
Highways: Allow
Toll Roads: Allow
Ferries: Avoid
Residents Only Streets: Forbid
HOV Lanes: Forbid
Display My Routes: On

These seem right and are basically the defaults.

Surely it can map a route to Florida; I certainly have used it with similar routes before this.

Suggestions?

Solution To My Problem

In spite of the fact that I hadn't changed many of the default values in Navigon, the one I had changed caused it not to work. I changed the vehicle type from automobile to motorcycle (silly me!). Once I changed it back, it mapped the route to FL fine.

Garmin VS Iphone App

I tried the iphone app but I didn't really like it. I ended up purchasing the GARMIN 765t from Best Buy remanufactured unit for $109. It has every bell and whistle a person could want on a Garmin. It will even broadcast on an FM channel. It doesn't come with lifetime updates but I contacted Garmin support and told them I just purchased it and they gave me 90 days of free updates. It's not waterproof but neither is my iphone. I was able to get a refund on the app.

I'm using GPS Drive by motion X and it works OK but I like what navigon looks like, might have to try it.

Downloaded..

While you're downloading apps for your iphone I found this one to be the best weather radar app. It works in landscape mode too. :doorag:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myradar-pro-weather-radar/id325683306?mt=8

Thanks Lamont...I downloaded...
lyonsden: check out the LifeProof case...100% waterproof (plus much more) for the iphone 4 or 4s....an incredible cover...

STILL NEED: Suggestion for "holder" for my iphone (with LifeProof case) that I can use to install my phone on dash when using the navigon app.... Thanks everyone...heck I'm going to come to Spyderfest in style...last year I would have 3 x 5 cards that told me how to get where I was going...had to use 3 x 5's couldn't see without readers. Since that time I now have these great motorcycle sunglasses with my reader ($25)...then if no sun...got a pair with no sun lens...such a deal...now I have the smart phone, navigon, MyRadar...heck oh dear next I'll find an app that I just put Ms Spyder on cruise...lean back and let "it" take me where I want to go!!!! :roflblack:

Testing Navigon and NavFree

I had tested Navigon on short (10 mile) trips but on nothing longer or more complex. Today, on a trip to Northern NJ, I decided to use Navigon on the way up and NavFree coming home. Both are available for Iphones and Ipads. Navigon is certainly more fully developed than NavFree. For example, Navigon offers add-ons for traffic and red-light cameras; these are only promised for NavFree. I also like the Navigon graphics better than NavFree.

Therefore, I was prepared to prefer Navigon. However, as our trip progressed it got further and further out of sync with what was actually on the ground so far that it was a good 8 to 10 miles ahead of where we actually were! I'm not sure how this happened. My Iphone lay on my dashboard during the whole trip. It never displayed any problem accessing the satellites. It simply wasn't close to being accurate.

On the way home, I tried NavFree and it performed flawlessly and accurately within a few feet. When I deliberately changed the route at one point, it changed the map without complaint or even announcing that it was recalculating.

Perhaps someone can explain how/why Navigon got so wrong? In my simple test, I saw no cause for it to fail.

I still like its looks and the add-ons it offers (though they are a tad pricey) but I could never trust it on my Spyder. Anyone else have problems with it?

I had a chance to put my Navagon through it's paces last weekend and I can't tell you how happy I am with this app. It blows away my Garmin with the amount of info that's on the screen and how accurate it was. I drove from Queens NY to Burlinton VT and then to Sherbrooke QC and back to Burlington without one hiccup. I love the little voice warnings when you go over the speed limit and how you can set it for how much over is okay. I love how when the speed limit is 100km it will show 62mph on the GPS. I love that you can easily switch from hours and minutes to arrival to time of arrival. Having the ipod control right there is great too. I plugged the unit into the cars speakers so it was easy to hear the directions. If Navagon had a standalone GPS unit I would dump my Garmins for it. nojoke

Some of those GPS apps(maybe all??) MUST have a cell signal to work. Noticed this on trip this summer when buddy was trying to use droid for GPS..... Kept losing signal and the it didn't track our position well at all.

IMO - nothing beats a dedicated GPS. Not to mention touchscreens on phones don't work well thru gloves.

Interestingly enough, Navigon is a Garmin Company. Check Amazon as they have several Navigon units for sale.

This wouldn't replace my 665 but it would replace the Garmin in my truck.

I used it last weekend in a car but I used the same Ram x-grip as I use on my RT. You can pipe it into your speakers by using the same connector you use for the ipod.

Ok I'm in the duh brainwave mode...my ipod connector is in the rear trunk (2010 RT)...so do I need to add something up on dash area to accomodate the adaptor.
