Just bought my first Spyder! Considering buying a warranty as it sat for 4 years - your thoughts?

Hello all! Tuesday I bought my first Spyder. It's a 2021 RT Limited with under 400 miles. Planning on changing the oil and filter and checking all the maintenance items. Owned a Ryker for the last 4 years, I always wanted a Spyder though. I'm in Vancouver, Washington. Love living here.
Considering buying a warranty on the machine because it has sat for 4 years. What are your thoughts? Also what are things I should consider inspecting or replacing? Thanks in advance for your wisdom. I'm so happy to find this forum and look forward learning and enjoying my Spyder.

Well having the Ryker, you probably know you have the best Can AM/Spyder dealership/service tech right there in Vancouver, Wa.

Congrat's on your new Spyder. If you have an operator's guide for the roadster, read the maintenance schedule that begins on pg. 99. Since it has been unused in four years, do know if any fuel stabilizer was put in the tank before it was laid up. It might be wise to drain the tank and start with fresh, nonethanol gas, Were I in your boots I would not consider any kind of third party warranty; just rathole some money each month to cover maintenance expenses. good luck!

Be sure to read the manual completely from the front cover to the back cover. Multiple times also. Make sure you understand how to check the oil levels in these wet clutch engines. It is nothing like most other engines I have ever owned. Ryde the Spyder for about 10 miles then idle for additional 10 minutes, turn off, then immediately pull the dipstick to wipe it off and reinsert to check oil level. I believe the manual says one has two minutes to check the oil level after shutting down, but do it quickly after turning off the engine. NEVER overfill or check on a cold engine. NEVER.

The 1330 engine is a good engine that doesn't seem to use oil between oil changes either. So long as the oil fill is in the cross/hatch area of the dipstick you are fine. It helps me to see the oil level by placing it on a white paper towel behind the dipstick, along with being outside in the bright sunshine.

Congrats on your new to you Spyder, and to joining the Wonderful World of Spyder Ryders with the 'Miles of Smiles' grins (and SpyderLvers too, of course!) 👏

As for that bit ^ - I don't think you can buy any warranty that's worth the $$ if the Spyder's original OEM warranty has expired, as the 'BEST Warranty' (that's it's name, and it is honoured by all Can Am On Road dealers, and is the only post OEM warranty that's provided/backed by BRP), can only be purchased BEFORE the OEM warranty cuts off, and that normally happens at 1 or 2 years, depending upon the current deal when it was originally sold. :(

So if your 'new to you' Spyder doesn't still have a valid & current OEM Original Purchase warranty &/or already have a BEST Warranty (get any Can Am Dealer to check the VIN) then there's no real value or benefit in you buying a post purchase warranty.

Here in Oz, there's moves afoot to ban these 'add-on warranty' things as nothing but a rip-off; because ALL the State & Fed Consumer Advocate organisations and Motoring Associations etc have identified them as being either outright scams or of far less value than their cost; basically just a case you giving the dealer a fist full of money for jam cos you believed the BS scheme someone has devised to make them more profit when selling you a vehicle, and all those organisations strongly advise buyers not to be suckered in! So unless you can verify from many other actual buyers/users that it's not just a rather expensive 'servicing agreement' with so many restrictions and limitations on what it'll do or where it will be honoured that it'll be nothing much more than a rip off and you'll never get any value from it, then DON'T BUY IT!! ;)

Here in Oz, the general advice is that if you want to spend the sort of $$ those warranty's normally cost on defraying any possible potential future service/repair costs, you'd be MUCH BETTER OFF by sticking the money you would've paid for such a warranty into sock and stuffing it into your bottom drawer until it's needed (btw, I've got a drawer full if cash stuffed socks now, from all the vehicles I've owned that never needed the dealer's add-on 'extended warranty' 😋); or maybe better yet, you should put that cash into an interest bearing deposit somewhere so that you can use it if/when it's ever required, rather than blowing it in advance of a fairly unlikely event that you'll ever really need it (if you keep up the scheduled maintenance) only to be told if/when you do ever try to use it that, "Sorry, but this particular warranty specifically excludes your circumstances because (insert stupid BS reason of their choice here)", or discovering that the particular dealer your Spyder is now at while awaiting repair either never did subscribe or no longer subscribes to that particular brand of 'give the dealer a fist full of money for jam cos I was a sucker of a buyer who believed the BS scheme!' 🤬

Just Sayin' ;)

First off Welcome to this site!

The following things you should inspect &/or change on your 2021 RT Limited are: tires; check the battery; all of the fluids (oil/ filter, O rings, etc.) brakes; sway bar.

Did the 2021 RT Limited still have the OEM Sway bar, or has it had an alignment done?

Deanna

Congratulations & welcome !

I'd suggest you also change the brake fluid. I bet it's been in there for longer than the 2 years recommended. While you are at it, maybe swap the OEM bleed nipples for 'speed bleeders' ready for the next brake fluid flush.

I would be a little concerned with the tires if it truly sat for 4 years. In 2021 I rode out to Sturgis from IL and was amazed by the number of toy haulers littering the roadways and the tire parts on the road. The stories that people were talking about their tires coming apart and the challenges of locating replacements. 2021 was the first year after covid that people got tired of staying home and decided to hook up to their trailers that had been sitting for 2 years and go. I suspect that the tires sitting developed a significant flat spot. If the bike feels like riding a rocking horse be careful.

Given the age of your new ride, I wouldn't waste the $$, and before you consider purchasing such a warranty read ALL, and I mean ALL the fine print. Self-insure the roadster, i.e., rathole some $$ each month for unexpected problems. As others have mentioned, shuck the tires and install quality automobile sneakers; they are well worth the expense. It's for your own safety.

I tripled the mileage on the rear tire and 1.5X on the fronts when I started using Vredestein tires for basically the same cost. OEM tires on wet roads are dangerous when worn. Not so with the Vredestein tires. Amazing wet tires.
