• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

More Competition?

Wow! I'm not sure about competition but it sure is interesting! I admire what he is trying to do. I wish him luck. But I think I'll take 14!! :D

Just about what I was going to say. I would think that thing is a very fair weather bird. I'd hate to see it in any kind of wind or turbulance.

I was thinking the same thing. looks like it could get tossed pretty easily...

You are basically a 900 pound (or whatever this thing weighs) pendulum. It has some inherent stability because of that, but the control factor will, I think, be not very precise.

I used to hang glide. That is a much more precise machine and it isn't all that precise.

I never did it but I used to go to an old Nike Missile base called Fort Funston and watch the hang gliders all day. They would run and just jump off of a sheer cliff and glide over the ocean. It was the coolest thing! But when the wind came up they were often grounded. I also saw alot of wrecks. Some did not have good outcomes...

I quit when my brother crashed our hang glider. It would have killed him but a buddy of ours was watching (didn't even know it was my brother). He was fairly close to the crash point.

The frame had crushed around my brother's chest. He was unconcious and the bent tubing was keeping his chest compressed so he could not breathe. Our buddy was able to spread the tubbing enough so my brother began to breath on his own.

He didn't realize it was my brother until later. I guess when someone is torn up and you don't expect it to be someone you know... You may not notice.

The kite was destroyed and I didn't buy another one.

I am quite sure that would have done it for me as well. Just what I saw was enough to make me decide against trying it. Well that and surviving a broken back! I mean how many bullets can you dodge? I have great respect for those who do fly. It looks like total freedom...

Scared the snot out of me the first few times! The ground drops out and so does your stomach!

But it is a rush that I've gotten nowhere else.

The kit I flew in those days had the glide ratio of a stone! They are much better today.

I loved it!

I bet that is an experience you will never forget. I have some hours in single engine aircraft (Cessana 152 and 172 types) and my first takeoff was the thrill of a lifetime for me, so I can relate somewhat.

I must say you are quite the dude, Ron! :D

I've got my pilots license. Mostly Cessna 150 & a little 175 time too. I liked that as well. But frankly, just doesn't compare to hang gliding. A little like the difference between a car and a motorcycle.

Scuba diving is also a great sport!

I was looking at a PowerChute before I got the Spyder. They're great fun, easy to fly and cost about the same as a Spyder - but you are very limited in using them. Requires pretty low winds. I quickly determined that as cool as they are, I'd only get to use it maybe a couple dozen times a year due to weather and setup, etc. --- whereas the Spyder is ready to go 365 days a year within minutes and doesn't much care about the weather.

Maybe I'm just a big chicken... but there's no way that I'd ever jump out of a perfectly good plane, or off the the side of a mountain that's not trying to fall over on me... :D

nice but this has a cooler look but doesnt drive on roads

I told that to my daughter when she told me she was going to become air-borne, but try telling that to an 18 year-old.

:roflblack: When I was skydiving, we used to say we already took one chance getting the plane off the ground, and there was no way we would a second chance sticking around for it to land. :roflblack:

Did some jumping in New Mexico when I was stationed there in the late 60's thru mid 70's. Most over the desert but some over the mountains. Jumped with some "smoke jumpers" as they called them back then, just for practice. Also took a few flights in a glider that one of our jet jockeys owned. The only word to describe that on the first flight was beautiful.
