• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I have now had my RTL for almost 5 years and put on almost 62,000 miles. I have records for all gas along with $/gal that I have bought since I have owned it. I did not keep track of octane level with each purchase but have used all levels. One thing I have noticed is the cost/gallon has the biggest effect on Cost/mile. The cost between the various grades can sometimes be quite dramatic. I just purchased a product (tablet) that claims it will treat 5 gal and will give up to a 10 point increase in octane. I plan on using 87 octane only and the tablets and see where this thing goes. My records are consolidated by month, year, and overall. I do ride some every month so I will be able to see any seasonal change also.
 
I don't understand the relationship between octane rating, and miles per gallon. However, if there is a minor improvement with those octane pills, your test would have to be conducted under identical conditions, with and without the octane pills. There are many variables, whenever riding to the same destination, such as temperature, wind, speed, traffic, and load. It will be interesting to read your results.

I don't really expect too much of an increase in MPG but hopefully some. The real change would hopefully be in cost/mile. The tablets only cost $1, so for 5 gallons I only need a $.20 decrease in the cost of 87 octane to break even. I have paid close to a $1.00/gallon premium for the good stuff. I potentially have enough to run a year. I will use the prior 5 years as the control and see if I get any and how much of an upward trend in MPG and any downward trend in $/mile. Momma says I either have to drive it less or figure a way to reduce costs!

After five years of ownership it is likely paid off and not making payments saves way more than the cost per mile for fuel whatever grade you use.
 

Could be something to consider. 91 oct/ethanol free gas in my area is about .75/ga more than 87/10% ethanol gas. Adding 4 gallons per fueling with 91 octane adds an additional $3. At a cost of approx. $1/tablet, you can save approx. $2 per four gallons. That said, a big benefit is that the 91 octane is ethanol free. Ethanol free gasoline can also get you an approx. 10% increase in mpg as it burns more efficiently. The octane booster tablets can be convenient when traveling if ethanol free isn't available. Much safer to carry than a liquid bottle...

My overall mpg to date is 37.81. My overall cost/mile to date is $.1036. I ride pretty hard when I'm not cruising but most of my rides are fairly long with mostly cruising. I hope this stuff is not snake oil as I am not willing to tolerate any pinging or loss of performance during hard acceleration.

makes a tablet good for 10-12 gallons. Could cut a tablet in half I guess, but from what I've read, too much can leave deposits and residue. I think the 4 gallon tablets would be the way to go.

Barring all other factors if you use the Octane of fuel that the engine was designed for you will always get the best mileage possible. Anything above or below that Octane is either a waste or will cause the ECU to de tune the engine resulting in a degraded mileage. It is just physics.
 
The OP said that the tablets will increase the octane by 10 points. I wonder what a point is? Certainly it can't go from 87 to 97 octane, or can it?
 
An interesting experiment, looks legit but I am skeptical until your results prove otherwise, premium gasoline is supposed to have additional additives that promote combustion chamber, valve cleanliness etc. I will continue to use premium but will watch for your results. I agree AndysF3S. These types of questions and research have all been asked and answered years ago. Nothing new here.
