Nelson-Rigg CAS-455 Tank Bag Review + Pics

My Nelson Rigg bag came today!!! :D I know, I know. It's taken me two years to get this??

Yup. I tend to move slowly on things. nojoke

No Spyder to install this on at home as it is up at the dealer. Oh well. It will give me a bit of time to play with figuring the in's and out's of my new Tourmaster Ladies jacket that came in the box too!!! I LOVE new things!!!! It's like Christmas!!!!

Screaminmeanie/Jo, you should look at Spyderwolf's pictures in this thread too. Your new NR bag should go on in a breeze after seeing this How To!!!!

Thanks for another in your continuing series of pictorial reviews. This one is as great as the rest.

A couple of notes on the BRP bag:

1. The newer version of the bag has replaced the felt on the bottom with a soft vinyl. It should not soak up water or stain the paint, like the felt did. I still am leery of using either one without a foam pad. Craft foam work well.

2. The BRP bad is not waterproof, but it is water resistant. The Nelson Rigg bag is probably the same. Some Camp-Dri or similar waterproofing spray would probably help both. The rain cover is essential with almost any tankbag during a downpour, IMO. Note that use of an opaque raincover like this, blinds the map pocket.

Thanks for the updated information on the BRP bag, and the advice on waterproofing the bags as well Scotty.

I can spend my time waiting for my Spyder by getting my new tank bag waterproofed with some good weatherproofing spray!!!

Just out of the box, it is a nice quality bag, I must say. Nelson Rigg stuff is tops IMO. Looks roooooooooomy too!! Stuff could actually get lost down in there!!!

I can't wait to have my Spyder to mount the bag and RYDE!!!!!nojoke

Thanks mucho, Spydewolf, for these how to pictures. Really made understanding the directions easier!!

tank bag

We got the Nelson-Riggs tank bag this past fall and I don't know how I did without it, It is very easy to install and it holds alot we used it as our toilet bag on our ride to Orlando in Feb. Just take it off and in with you. Has enough room for all of our stuff without expanding it. Also the side pockets are great for keeping a pen for notes.

Great review and I know more people are going to get one and love them, because of your review.

Thank you for doing the great review

Thanks for the compliments on the review. I am glad to hear that it is helping others along the way as well.

CAS-455 Nelson Rigg Tank Bag Issue

On our 2011 RS-SM5, I tried installing my new Nelson Rigg Spyder specific tank bag. I do not see any of the brackets under the steering tree that others have mentioned. I am wondering if something changed with the 2011 model. I worked and worked on trying to get the tank bag attached at the front and the straps are way to short to attach to anything near or under the steering tree. It fits OK at the rear under the seat. Can anyone address the difference maybe in the brackets? I have installed many a tank bag and this one appears not to work. Thanks!

For the newer models yes they removed the bracket under the seat. We offer a new strap that can connect to the existing straps on your bag and mount securely on your Spyder. Please just call or email ([email protected]) us and we would be happy to send it to you at no charge. Here is a link to the install instructions for this strap when using a newer Spyder model.

The new production of these bags includes a modified strap for use with the newer Spyders.

Thanks for this additional information. I have yet to see a 2011 in person, so wasn't aware of the change that was made. I will be sure to look at one closely while I am at the owner's event in Maggie Valley.

install issue on 2009

Hello all... great thread!

My wife bought an 09 used and loves it... we ordered the NelsonRigg bag and attempted to install today. We see what appears to be the bracket, and followed the instructions. When we pull the strap snug, the velcro hooks are way past the loops as in what appears to be too long. If we loosen to hook the velcro, it is way too loose and the bag is not snug on the bike..

I cannot imagine the bag is wrong, so what is it that I am missing??? Anyone seen or experienced this?

Thanks,

Pat in NH

wish they would make a RT model, nice to have a little more space upfront the glove box is limited to well.. gloves.

Well, I have a suggestion, but I am not sure what the demand would be compared to the tank bag:

Many folks have the BRP backrest/sportrack. It doesn't lend itself well to a generic bag back there (I have a Nelson-Rigg roll bag strapped tight there now) but it would be nice if there were something more form-fitting for those of us who have not opted for hard luggage.

Also, another set of saddle bags specifically for theSpyder would be nice. I had sold my N-R bags due to the fact that they just didn't work well with a passenger (feet cramped) and they interfered with the turn signals when pushed way back.

Two cents. Thanks for great products!

I searched the threads for some info on the Nelson Riggs saddle bags. From your comment, I assume you did own a pair at one time. Did they work well on the RS? Thanks for your input.

Nelson-Rigg Tank Bag

SpyderWolf, thanks for the great write up and pictures of the NR bag. I should receive mine this week. I have a 2010 RS SE5. I ordered a BRP tank bag a while back and when it came in it didn't have a map window in it so, I didn't keep it, then I order the NR bag. I want to purchase the passenger seat and the rear rack bag from BRP but I don't know if they will both fit on the Spyder at the same time. I could use the extra space since I am traveling longer distances, probably like a lot of Spyder owners.

Yep, Pat. We ordered the NR tank bag for my 2010 RS a few weeks ago, and found the same thing . . . straps are too long and velcro missed the hooks by about 3 inches. We were a bit surprised too.

I overlapped the strap about 3 inches and stitched it with my sewing machine. Now it fits, stays nice and snug, and easy on & off.

I chose the NR bag over the BRP because I wanted the clear map pocket, lots of room, and NR's reputation.

One more Thank You! Spyderwolf for the review and all the feedback.
