RT Headset Question

I need information on the headset(s) required for use with the BRP CB/Intercom unit for the RT. I'm only interested in information specific to the BRP unit & if it requires a headset configuration that is specific to the Spyder RT alone. Fred Rau at one time mentioned that it looked like a Victory pin configuration, but I don't recall seeing anything that confirms this.

Do I have to go with the BRP headset or can I go with another brand such as EdSets or J&M?

Thanks for the response Lamont, & I have read that in the past. I guess what I'm after is specifics on the headset. I currently have an EdSets 2G for my Goldwing. It is 5 pin. If I tell them I need a lower cord to go from a 5-pin to a 7-pin, is that all the information they'd need to make it work, or would they also need to know what I'm using it for?

If I decide to get a new headset, say from Edsets or J&M, which one would I order? Is one 7-pin the same as all the other 7-pin, or does one bike manufacturer have different specifications that would make swapping a bad idea?

For that matter, is the BRP headset so good that I'd be happy with that & not need to look at after market headsets? If so, that'd make life much simpler.

Bottom line is that I'd really like to be able to use the same headset on both my Goldwing and my Spyder RT. I realize I'd have to swap lower cords between them (if that's available and/or possible), but would it work?

Fred rides a Wing and as far as I can tell he's just swapping a 5 pin for a 7 pin. My guess is any 7 pin will work but I would talk to whoever you're going to buy it from and let them do their homework.

I would make an adapter from 5 to 7 pin. You are going to need to know the pinout diagrams for both...or experiment until you get it right. I think Fred Rau had a radio shop do his. No available wiring diagrams for the Spyder RT yet, as far as I know. Not sure about the Goldwing. Keep in mind that if BRP uses all seven pins on their connectors for some functions, you are going to be missing something.

I thought that Fred told us in one of the Monday night chats that he had two or three different brands of headsets that work with the RT, that the RT wiring is a standard wiring configuration for motorcycle communication systems.

J&M sells the 7-pin version for the Victory which is the same configuration. You end up having to buy the lower cord which raises the price significantly over the $189 for the Can-Am.

That being said I don't know anything about the quality of the Can-Am set compared to J&M.

I like the J&M because I keep the same headset in our helmets and we only have to change the lower cords when we buy a new bike.

I certainly agree with your approach, especially since both the quality and features of the BRP units are unknown at this point. We love our Starcom1 headsets, and would be reluctant to change those, either. We also like the wayt they fit our helmets, and prefer their methods to the BRP boom mikes. I think a radio shop or a friend who does electronics could make you an adapter for just a few bucks. Be aware that if your units don't have high-gain microphones, however, that there may be a significant volume loss.

The SpyderLovers chat info he gave was right along those lines. He stated you do not have to use BRP's headset, that there were other options. And he said that he had successfully used a couple of different headsets with the RT.
