Run Flat Tires

Anyone check or try running Run Flats in their Spyders? Are they available?

On my Mini and many other sports cars are a set if run flats that give them the added go-cart feeling.

Just curious.

Agree..!!

:agree: It will be a size problem. They would also be more expensive..but I'm sure there are those watching for them...:lecturef_smilie:

I doubt it..........................Have you priced a KENDA mounted and balanced and put on you Spyder :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::gaah:...........But it's moot , because they don't make our size anyway.....Mike :agree:

For sure..!!

Got several quotes for run flats for the mini.....and just so you know she can get a flat any time now...:roflblack: And the mini tire is close to ours. I do my own work so don't know what it costs to have a Kenda mounted and balanced but the last Kenda I ordered was just under a hundred bucks. I have 19,000 miles on my present Kenda....but like you say it's all moot..!!

My wife has a mini too and it seems like from what I'm reading many of those peeps are ditching the run flats and adding a spare or traveling with a plug/pump kit. Seems a lot of complaints about the run flats making the car ride kinda harsh.

The wifes does ride kinda rough/hard but since she only has about 6k miles on it I haven't really paid all that much attention to whether its tires or just the way the car is.

I would assume the ride is different since the run flats sidewalls have to be able to hold the car up with no air. I know a bunch of "darkside" guys are running them on the Gold Wing and reporting good results. If I could find them in the right size, I'd give them a try. I think the stock tires have too soft a sidewall anyway.

My wife has a 2012 Cooper S with run flats.
Had to replace one due to a screw in the sidewall........very expensive, cost about $300

Also reading Mini forums, many junk the run flats and go with normal tires for a smoother ride and better handling.

Hi Tess'

Re: many junk the run flats and go with normal tires for a smoother ride

I used to own a '02 Lexus SC430. It came with run-flats; very harsh ride & very expensive for a replacement tire.

I switched to Michelins and a pump/patch kit. BMW & Lexus both make & sell them.

Hopefully, there will be no more run-flats in my life.

I don't think I'd like a rough ride on the Spyder but I think the run-flat tires would be good for a 622 trailer. I'm thinking of MurphyBrown's trailer tire experience on the way home.

run flat i use RIDE On tire snot! it works great, and you will never be stuck on the s

FYI Run Flats are tires with a built-in spare. Most small sports cars (Porsche) have them. My Mini Cooper came with them. They do run ruff and give a noisy bumpier ride but become a spare if they go flat.

Just wondering if they work on Spyders. Think I'll stick to Spyder tires. Thx

:gaah:....My reference to the " mounted and balanced " refers to the fact that you can ONLY purchase KENDA tires from a BRP Dealer......and they are going to charge you their SHOP rate at their EST. shop time ...............What you can do personally is the same as what I can do personally......waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less expensive ...........done waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.........and completely shunned by 95 % of the Spyderlovers......................No Harm...No Foul........Mike :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Another point to consider when considering run-flat tyres is that they require a special rim which has a
profile with a deeper bead and is tested for porosity. I believe that standard tyres may be able
to be fitted to run-flat rims but the reverse is not possible.
Tyre sealant that is injected into the fitted tyre is OK (but hated by tyre-fitters!) and helps balance the
wheel as a bonus.
There is a HUGE caveat when using sealant. It works very well but can mask serious damage to the
structure of the tyre especially with nylon braced construction. The tyre remains inflated but is in danger
of a blow-out due to structural weakness. Nevertheless the risk is marginal but it's best to be aware of it.

Tires

spare tire rack.jpg
I wish my friend was home from his trip, but He has the trailer hitch on his spyder and he took the ball off and welded a square tube on the bar where the ball would go. He ordered another rear rim and tire and put it on a spare tire rack that he bought off of Amazon. I will see if I can post a picture of the rack.

All of you folks with MINIs... :2thumbs:

Have you taken a 2014 out for a test ride?
They've done some VERY effective suspension calibrations on them this year.
They ride MUCH smoother and quieter; yet still ROCK in the twisties!!:yes::yes:
