Skills Test on Can Am Spyder

Has anyone here ever taken a motorcycle skills test on a Spyder? Just curious what is required. Do they still do the weave through cones? Is this even possible to do on the Spyder?

I have my permit, and am going later today for my full 3 wheel endorcement.

Just curious what others have experienced with this skills test.

Let us know how it goes. I too have my permit and need to go take the rideing test.

Before taking the driving test, know each driving exercise that is required. Then you will have complete understanding of each test. Perhaps you can practice the driving the test course before taking the exam.

Skills test

My wife took the test on our spyder and the instructors tailored the test parameters to the spyder. Sometimes they would kick the cones out just a bit further to accommodate the track of the spyder. On the figure 8 "box" work, they allowed leeway due to the turning radius. The instructors we had were awesome and took the time to accommodate everything that was asked for due to being a different machine. She passed with flying colors.

Thanks. That eases my mind a little.

I did set up the cone weave, 12 ft apart, 1 ft each side off center. Practiced it, and did pretty well. If they space them out further, it should only make it easier.

I also practiced the stop and go, right turn signal, upshift, downshift, etc. Unless they surprise me with something not covered in the DMV manual, I should be OK.

I'll keep all posted.

I got my endorsement in silverdale, Washington. There is a course practice for Spyder in the owners manual check it out. For Washington state resident, check out the Licensing office for 3 wheel motorcycle booklet.

Not to worry..!!

Although we don't need anything but a drivers license I do have a motorcycle one as well. They will allow you wiggle room due to the nature of the beast. Considering that much of their testing is for balance and you don't have a problem there..good luck..you will do fine..!!

Sounds like you're making the necessary preparations to pass the test with no problems.

I just did a safety course last weekend with a gold wing trike and 18 other two wheelers. All the instructor (a Newport News Motorcycle Cop) did differently for the spyder & trike was to make the cone gates wide enough for us to just squeeze through. All he said to me was "You really ride the h*** outta that bike." So I know a course can be done with style on a can am. BTW the weaves were set up for the two wheelers and I did those without problems as well as a gated U turn. You'll do great!:)

did mine in WA 2 weeks after I bought my Spyder in CA, and it was easy. I would have a pic for you of the diagrams, but I'm having issues loading from my comp even though it's a PNG file.

A picture sure would be nice. Just would like to know what I'm in store for.

SKILLS TEST

I took the skills test on my Spyder yesterday at the local DMV office. It was a breeze. They had to make the cones wide enough to accomodate the Spyder. I have the SE-5 tranny and the instructor waived the exercise to shift from 1st to 2nd gear because the parking lot was so small, I couldn't get up enough speed to shift gears. The test was very easy IMO. I had taken a 3 wheel course for 2 days several weeks ago and it was much more involved.

ya, the only reason I got a 97/100 on my skills test is cause I was going too fast for her to measure the quick stop. lol never got into 2nd gear.

Here in East Tennessee the test is grueling!

1st, you have to get on your Spyder and start it up.

Then you have to ride down the street (with the DMV person watching) and make a U-Turn on a single lane road WITHOUT TAKING EITHER FOOT OFF THE FOOT PEGS!!!! :yikes:

If you can do this, you pass! Oh my WORD! The sheer stress of these unreasonable requirements are more than most can bear!

 The agony... :D

EXACTLY!

Can you imagine taking a slow, sharp turn and having to keep BOTH feet on the pegs?! What are these people thinking? :dontknow:

Oh, and I forgot to mention. If you attempt to ride away without first putting the kick stand up you FAIL Immediately!

I'm sorry, I just can't talk about it anymore....

The wife took her skills test on her RT and all they made her do was two circles around the parking lot and one full stop. NC doesn't require a three wheel endorsement, you'll have the M on your license. Where are you in NC?
