• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Trouble loading pictures - how can I make them smaller?

With the new forum format, it seems that all of the pictures that I used to could load are now too large. If I try an attachment, or load it as an image, it still gives an error about the picture being too big. Is there an issue that I don't know about? How can I make my images smaller?

Information I got from the forum Admin is that the limit for pictures to upload must be less than 1 MB. That is 1 Megabyte. One Megabyte= 1,000 KB or Kilobytes. If the picture is larger than this, the software will reject it automatically. The name box below your pictures should have the size info in the box with the name. If it is not there, you can right click on the picture and select properties. The size in memory used will be in the properties.

I believe the other forum software had a way of reducing picture size automatically before it was posted. This new forum software just has the max size limitations and you have to reduce the images before attempting to post them. The old forum software was reducing your images for you, and you didn't notice the images that actually got posted were smaller.

If the picture is larger than that, there are several ways to make it smaller. One way is to make the physical size of the picture smaller, using an image manipulation app. Another way would be to reduce the resolution with an image app. You could also reduce the colors used, or if you need major reduction just greyscale it.

Need help with it post back. I am pretty good working with images.

Check out the Sticky/thread below, @blacklightning. It could help you and if you follow the directions, it will help others too. ;)

If you can save the resized pic as a .jpg, that will also reduce your overall file size.

Does anyone know what image pixel dimensions work best with this Forum?

The file size will depend almost entirely on the quality of the picture. All other considerations being equal, the GIF image type will be the smallest file size for common image types. However some of the image types limit the number of colors that can be used. Again, this is a picture quality decision, and very few people will have the picture reduction software to deal with image quality.

What will work best depends on what kind of image you are posting. If it is something like a small part or a tool picture, a 500 x 500 pixel sixe would be about right if the picture does not need to be too detailed. If you are posting a photo of 30 or 40 people with their Spyders, you will need 800 to 1000 pixels wide and 600 to 800 high minmum. You will not get a lot of detail, but you are trying to include all the subjects in the picture. A two color drawing will not need near the file size as a color photo from a camera. There is really no correct answer to what size works best. It depends on the what the image is of..

There another thing to consider on image size too. Some of the members will be seeing the image on a laptop computer screen or maybe even a large 30+ inch monitor on a desktop box. A huge image is no problem for them. Other members will be looking at the image on a smart phone screen or maybe a small, portable tablet computer. The typical laptop screen size would be about 1920 X 1080 pixels,. but screen size varies with the laptop size.A typical smart phone screen is only around 400 x 800, but some are much larger. There is no correct answer here either, because of the different device sizes and the different screen resolutons available.

Certainly none of the 3,000 to 6,000 pixel wide lanscape setting photos from a hi-def setting on a good camera are needed for posting on the forums, but not so many people have the software to reduce photo resolution or know how to use it.
