• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Weird experience today

Earlier today was tooling along the freeway on my 2008 SM-5. Traffic was moving around 35 mph, Spyder in 3rd gear. Next thing I know Spyder dies. Grab the clutch and start coasting in heavy traffic, look down at the panel, no abnormal indicator lights, no warning messages, nothing seemingly wrong but notice tach needle is stuck at 8,000 rpm. Continued to coast thinking I've got to get across 4 lanes to make it to the side of the freeway. Tried the starter and Spyder fired back up. Was moving through a construction zone so there were no shoulders to pull over on so I motored on and no further problems appeared.

Very strange.

Is the rpm needle still stuck?

Loose/blow relay/fuses in the front fuse box?

Also wondering if your battery terminals are loose?

:dontknow:

I've had that happen... Just motoring along and spyder coughs up a lung(intake noise) and dies.

I think it merits keeping a close eye on your spyder and giving it a once over for loose hoses, and electrical connections, including looking for corrosion.

Otherwise, I think it is just a personality trait of the stock spyder.

Everything returned to normal including the tach. I'll re-check the fuses and relays just to be safe and take a look at the battery terminals.

Only has 3,200 miles on it but I've had a couple of odd events with it the last few times I've ridden including the steering issue. The dealer is aware of my steering issue and plans to replace the steering unit when I take it in for its next service.

Yeah, I've had that happen recently as well except the motor didn't die but it did blow-back thru the airbox a few rides back. I was already used to the usual backfiring thru the pipe but the airbox route was something new.

Today just as the Spyder died I heard what I could only describe as the sound of a metal #1 golf club driver hitting the ball at the sweet spot. That "ping" noise is what I heard and the motor died. Traffic was really heavy, lots of 18 wheelers chugging along side so it was hard to pin point the noise. When it died all I could think of was getting to the side of the freeway

Still betting that noise was the intake. If so that is more normal to happen while taking off from a standstill. Mine used to do it all the time, but less so with the updates and the miles....

Just got my Juice Box Pro in today, so hoping to solve all the running issues with that.

8000 rpm in 3rd gear going 35 mph? I'm always in 2nd gear at the speed and it seems to stay around 5000 - 6000 rpm.

Seems like my Spyder likes being around 5000 rpm at all times.

I've had mine die when I first start it and get going on a cold morning going from first to second gear but once it warms up it's fine.

Metric RPMs. :D

No, engine speed was within normal range. After the engine died the tach went to 8,000 and remained there until I restarted the engine. Everything went back to "normal" after that.

Totally agree. The sweet spot in the power band is just past 6000, so 14 likes to stay somewhere between 5000 - 6000. That way she just purrs along and responds quickly if I need it to.

Can't speak to the "anomally" though. So far I have not experienced anything strange like that.
