What is the Latitude of Ryker Vertical Headlight Range Adjustment?

Shortly after I picked up my ’22 Sport I changed out the pathetic OEM headlight bulbs with some LED replacements. An improvement in brightness was obvious, but some slight tweaking was necessary for L<->R adjustment, but those were easily brought into into proper positioning as the adjustments were easily accessible. Adjustment changes were very obvious when the adjustment screws were turned. Unfortunately, the vertical beam positions were still too low, just like the originals. Since access to those adjustments were difficult to reach, I had to wait until the time came to pull the glove box so I could get to them.

That finally happened a day or so ago, but tweaking the vertical adjustment screws of the lamps showed no vertical up/down movement of either the left or right beams what-so-ever. I was expecting the same obvious response as the horizontal adjustments, but that wasn’t the case.

What am I missing?

Think I finally resolved the non-responsive headlight bulb alignment issue (no up/down beam movement by the adjuster). In my case, I had two issues, the headlamp assemblies themselves, and the Auxito LED bulb update selection I’d made.

So I didn’t jeopardize the integrity of my own headlight assemblies, I purchased a used one from eBay so I could figure out how the adjustment mechanism worked. The one I got came with a bulb, an LED-type with the cooling fan on the rear and a pigtail connection lead. One thing I noticed too was that the vertical adjuster screw had a lot of exposed thread sticking out the rear, just like the both of mine. Once I got the bulb out of the way so I could look down inside, the ball end of the adjuster was a good 1/4 - 3/8” away from a pocket/socket on the back of the reflector. In that condition, there was no way in Hades the in and out screw adjustment was going to have any effect on the beam’s adjustment. When I pulled my first one from my bike, it had the same issue. Once the screw was adjusted in so it made contact with the reflector’s adjuster’s ball socket, the reflector could respond. In addition, the adjuster ball on the end of the screw was captured so backing it out allowed the reflector to respond in that direction as well.

That was the first part of the problem, the second was my bulb selection itself. Even with the adjuster being screwed in so it was contacting the reflector’s adjuster socket, the beam projected on a wall had very little movement. Just for grins, I stuck one of the original incandescent bulbs in a lamp and BINGO! The bulb’s beam now had up/down vertical movement. I then removed the fanned bulb from the eBay lamp and put it in my assembly on the bike. It too also adjusted like it should. I can only assume that the design of the Auxito bulbs simply weren’t compatible with the design of the Ryker’s lamp reflectors.

Since the eBay assembly’s bulb didn’t have any ID marks, I'm not sure whose it was. I went ahead and got a pair of the fanned bulbs offered by Slingmods. They seem to be working just fine and I’m in the process of adjusting them so I can get a decent view of the road while not blinding oncoming traffic in the process. The eBay unit had free returns, so it was sent back a few days ago.

In that regard, a few years ago a fellow posted that the Ryker’s Manual was incorrect in that the vertical and horizontal adjuster descriptions were reversed. I thought he was incorrect based on my early experience when I made some slight horizontal adjustments to the beams when I first installed the Auxito bulbs several months ago. The designated horizontal adjuster did what it was supposed to do. Now that I’m making some “extreme” adjustments to get the beams where I want them, I can see what he was talking about. I think it has to do with the reflector’s common pivot point so the two adjusters need to work in unison to get the desired results. There are some regions of adjustment where the two do seem to be reversed.

Hopefully I can get things tweaked in this evening, now that some of the constant evening storms have slackened off.
