2014 ST with error code P0340 - anyone help me figure out where the camshaft position sensor is?

Hello I’ve been searching the threads for a camshaft position sensor replacement. Today while riding we stopped for a break, when she started her Spyder it wouldn’t stay running and the check engine light was flashing where the miles are. It shows code P0340.

I removed the panels like I was going to do an oil change and searched around. The threads claim it’s behind my oil filter housing, but all I see is a sensor I think that’s behind the front belt pulley. It also has two bolts holding it in (rather than on like on part #420664026 and would be tight to remove, without removing the pulley. Can someone help me out in figuring out where this camshaft sensor is. My wife’s can am Spyder is a 2014 ST SE5 with a 991 engine. Thanks for any advice helping me solve this. The local Spyder dealers around Syracuse NY refuse to work on machines over 10 years old.

It's on the right side of the bike, down behind the oil filter housing. It's held on with ether a quick release clip or a 10mm bolt, it should be facing the cam shaft down in there. You need to take down the filter housing, it's behind it!

I went to can-ampartshouse and found it under the valve cover page. Also they listed the part as 420664046.

Thanks, this is a 998 V-Twin engine, not a 1330 Triple. I think it’s an easy enough fix, but I can’t find it. I have all my left side covers off like I’m doing an oil change. Not sure where or what other covers I need to remove to find the valve cover. Maybe the right or the upper left cover? Thanks.

Please for clarity : description of L/R from what position? Sitting on, or looking from the front of the Spyder? (Granted, the Default should be sitting on, unfortunately however, not everyone knows that.)

Left when sitting on the seat are the panels I take off for an oil change. The only left side panel I have not removed is the upper one above those that need to be removed for an oil change. I’m wondering if it’s on the right side, like when doing an oil change on a 1330?

Hey Rick. Nice job pulling up the code and providing all the information. Left side, back side of front cylinder valve cover. Remove the left upper panels. While you’re in there, should replace the two MAP sensor vacuum hoses as a preventative measure, if it’s never been done. Use silicon vacuum hose. Doesn’t matter what color. 3mm ID, both are 85mm long. Refer to attached video for how and where. You’ll also spot the cam sensor in the video. And as mentioned above, correct part number is 420664046. Easy-Peasy. Good Luck.

When mine failed (1330) what I found was the electrical connection was contaminated with oil. The part # that came off the bike ended in 45 and the new one ended in 46. Totally different looking part. Known problem in certain years. Mine failed at 34,000 miles. I was able to limp mine home.

Her ST only has a little over 14,000 on it. Headed out now to get that upper cover off, or try to. Thank you everyone for your help.

Found it after pulling that top left hand cover off. There’s a lot of wires and that MAP sensor in the way to removing the camshaft position sensor. Not sure how I would get it by the MAP sensor. It looks like I have to go about removing the top panels and air box from the engine to access it. It’s pretty tight in there, Thank You for the help at least I’m getting to know this old ST.

As the video shows, he removed that screw from the MAP sensor in order to get at the front vacuum line. You can do the same. And as mentioned, follow the wire harness from the cam sensor to the harness connector. Pull it apart and see if it’s full of oil or corrosion. Might be the problem after all. Big picture, it’s just a puzzle. Take it apart and put it together one piece at a time.

Yeah I’m going to pull the map sensor out to reach that camshaft sensor. Now I know why the comments were made about losing the bolts - it’s tight (dam engineers ). It’s my project now for tomorrow morning. Thanks all for this help with this.

While my connection had oil in it I replaced the CPS with the new part # one.

Yeah after all you have to do to get to it I plan on doing the same. I’m going to stuff some rags around so the bolt can’t fall into the engine area. Thank You again
