There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Not Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd

I recently had the oil changed (not at the dealer) and now my 2011 RT with the SE5 trans and ~8000 miles has started not always manually downshifting from 3rd into 2nd. It is downshifting fine on its own but sometimes when I manually downshift it acts like it will downshift but then stays in 3rd. It takes 2 or 3 tries for it to shift. All other gears downshift manually and automatically with no issue. The RPM's are around 4000 tp 4500 when I have the issue.

The dealer checked the filters and said that they were the old paper filters and the guy that changed the oil for me should have used the new all metal ones. They felt the paper filters was most likely the issue. They are thinking that the paper is sometimes collapsing and not allowing the correct oil flow.

Anyone else have an issue like this? Appreciate any feedback.

So did the dealer put in new filters ?,
And if ''not'' how did he know what filters were use by the non dealer??

Missed down shifts

My 2012 SE5 with 5000 miles does the same thing. I use the new filters and did not see this issue before having my 600 service when they did some updates. I had the latest updates done on Saturday and it still can miss down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. I did another oil change tonight and will see if it happens again. I never had this issue with my '09.

try to answer all the questions:
1) yes we checked the oil level. That was pour first thought and it was fine. Checked it several times to be sure.
2) the dealer mechanic removed the cover over the oil pan and looked at the filter. He said that they look different and that there should have been a sticker on the pan if someone had used the new filter.
3) I asked if I needed to do another oil change and the dealer said there would be no issues if I did not other than what I was already experiencing.
4) talked with the guy that did the oil change and he did not know about the new filters.

Did not have the issue today, but then I was driving a little different this time to see if I could determine any other factors.

I had the same problem last week. I am 400 miles from an oil change. The temp outside was below 40 when this happened. After the engine temp got above 2 bars everything was fine. It only has done it 2 times when the temp was that low.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong,
But the only way i know to see the filter is to remove the housing [cap], The filter is a cartridge type, and if the housing is removed you will lose most of the engine oil..:dontknow:

On the SE you can tell if it has the new filter by whether or not the new, deeper filter cap has been installed. If you remove the cover, you may lose oil, but you may not lose a lot, depending on where the oil pump rotor is at the moment.

The mechanic only removed the white body panel. I assumed he could tell from that whether or not it was the correct type. He did not loosen the filters, plugs, caps, etc.

Just pulled the body panel myself and you can see the filter cap but I would not know one way or the other. Can't see the second filter from there.

He can tell by the filter cover on an SE.....but I question whether the filter is actually your problem. The old filters worked adequately if the oil was changed in a timely fashion and the correct viscosity oil was used. If your mechanic used 20W-50, as is common on many other motorcycles, all bets are off. That could cause shifting problems all by itself.

Why do I have a feeling this thread is going down the slippery slope of an oil discussion again?

sounds like the wrong spec oil was used to me.

Sticker

The sticker the mechanic is talking about is included in the New filter kit and is applied to the oil tank.

Scotty may be onto something about the wrong oil and should be checked out. IMO

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was on a 3 day 700 mile rally with a Knights on Bikes group that I ride with. Had a great time even with the morning's 30's temps. I did not have the issue all weekend. However, I had a trailer behind me most of the weekend and was in trailer mode which changes the shifting.

I do not know what the oil viscosity used but I do know it was BRP SEI-Synthetic. I have been changing oil at around 3500 miles, so this was the third change inlcuding the 600 miles done by the dealer. The other guy did the second and third (last) changes.

I plan to ride to work again in the morning so I will see if it does it again (too cold for business dress today). It has done it on my route to the office on all but one occasion. I'll post again tomorrow on whether or not it happens.

Thanks for all the repliles and suggestions.
