• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

600 mile break in

Looks like I will be picking up my 2013 RS-S SE-5 today. I'm wondering if its ok to keep the rpm's up above 4300 and shift at 5100 rpm for the first 600 miles or so.....Thanks.

That's pretty much the preferred range, just avoid hard braking and drag racing according to the manual.

Maybe that's why I couldn't get Cruzr Joe to drag race...

Yes keeping the rpm up is what u want to do with the se5 keeps your clutches in good shape and not lugging it the Rotax likes the higher rpm so enjoy.
 
Varying the RPM's is the key. Too low is every bit as bad, if not worse, than too high. Breaking them in hard is better than going light as far as I'm concerned. You want higher RPMS to seat the rings in place, also do some engine braking on your stops to create backpressure.

The main thing to watch/not do, is get on the freeway lock in at a comfortable rpm and hold it there for hundreds of miles to get the break in done. This will damage the engine causing it not to perform at its best...:lecturef_smilie:
 
IMHO-You are looking for engine pressure and heat cycles to seat the rings etc etc..
Don't baby it, accelerate fairly hard a good bit.
Don't flog it, but work it out pretty hard.
Run it hard for a short period then give it a cool down period.
Babying it and going easy on it or doing a long highway run are probably the worst things you can do.

I recommend varied driving conditions so the :spyder2: is subjected to everything. In town stop and go, medium speed roads and some highway speed roads. This will subject the :ani29: to different conditions and loads. The 4500-5500 shift range should be used. I do not recommend flogging or beating the crap out of the :spyder2: during the break-in process.

At lower speeds, the higher rpm shifting range will seem a bit weird if you are coming from some other type of motorcycle.

Around town--35 mph ball park---I usually don't get out of 2nd gear.
Intermediate--45 and less--right around third gear tops.
Highway--55-60 fourth gear tops
65 mph + fifth gear works well.
 
Actually after careful reading of the owners manual break in is 200 miles and the tires don't grip as good and the brakes don't grab as good so take it easy is the upshot. I don't see anything regarding the engine...

What a about freeway cruising for 50-60 miles at a time? The stretches I rode on didn't have much in the way of places to pull into (I-86 between bath and olean, ny), but stopped at places once I got off at my chosen exit points.

Cruising the freeway is one of the worst things you can do for the first few hundred miles. If you must ride there, be sure to vary the speed frequently. Ride at 60, then 75, then 65, etc. You can also use different gears. Accelerating and decelerating helps things wear in and seat, and it varies the engine temperatures a little.
