Pay attention to all recall letters!

As the title states, pay attention to recall letters. I received a recall letter on my 2003 jeep liberty about 2-3 weeks ago. This one was for an airbag. Well, I thought I would get around to it, but really didn't make it a priority. This past Sunday, the wife and I are sitting in the driveway, about to head out to the department store. With the jeep running, and before I can put it into drive, the driver side airbag deploys:yikes:. The dust and smoke from the deployment fills the cabin. On monday, I gave the dealer a call and he says that they do not have the parts to fix the recall, and they haven't even started manufacturing them yet. I explain that my bag just went off and he says to come in on Tuesday morning. I go in today, and they tell me that they cannot install another $900 bag until the item that makes it deploy is redeveloped and that could be 6 months. He says I have 2 options- 1) trade in for another car on their lot, or 2) take a buy back from jeep. They offer me $2500 for a trade in and I tell them to go **** themselves. I leave and call the number on the recall sheet and they say they will get back with me in a day or 2 with info on a rental car, and make me an offer for a buy back. Considering it is in no means my fault, I am thinking that the buyback should be at or around KBB or something. The dealer said it would probably be around trade in, or whole sale price. I will let you know how this pans out, but if they go with a low number, I will get my local investigative reporter on the case, and see if one of the local sharks (lawyers) want to have a go at them.

 I started getting recall letters about my 2006 Liberty in January... They were dealing with the fact that these vehicles sometimes catch fire, after a rear-end collision. :yikes:
I called the service shop, and promised to NOT back into anything too solid, until they have a chance to put a Trailer hitch on the critter. (That was Jeep's solution!)
Anyway; Springtime came... we didn't burn up, and I ended up with a class III hitch on my Liberty for free!
(Re-Design the airbag deployment system??? Somebody's pulling your leg...)

I think the air bag situation has to do with a gazillion makes and models. Many have defective electronics causing them to go off. I can see this whole situation as being a cluster ---- because of number of vehicles involved. Not having a solution yet?--then why did they send the recall notices? :bbq::bbq::bbq:

It's worse...

they just recalled 33.8 million air bag parts. That is a lot of cars from a lot of countries...:yikes:

I got the trailer hit recall, and the free trailer hitch as well. I asked them about installing the wiring harness for the hitch and they said "fine, that will be $300". I ordered the harness on Ebay for $27 and installed it myself.
As for the airbag, the recalled part is the activation devise. That is the defective part that has not been put into manufacturing yet. There are a load of Hondas on their lot with airbag recalls as well. Their issue is the airbag itself containing scrapnal. I just want a solution from either a buyback, or a fixed airbag.

Sounds like a call to WRAL.

I've got an easier plan to follow: I'm not gonna plan on hitting anything! :D
If that was the case, I would be fine, but my airbag deployed just sitting in the driveway. Now driving is a lot more difficult with an airbag hanging out in front of you. I would just cut it off and continue to drive, but it will not pass inspection with no airbag since it is considered a safety issue.

We have a newer Jeep in the family and it has had 3-4 recalls since we bought it a few years ago...they still don't have parts to fix the problems...one recall is a couple years old now I believe.

Chrysler just doesn't care about their customers.

So; why do you still have it, if you don't like the Company? :dontknow:
Sell it, and get yourself something else...

I cannot speak for snoopy, but as for my liberty, I like the size, power, ride, etc... If they do me right by this vehicle, I will possibly purchase another jeep product, but you can bet it will have to be at a very reasonable price. I have no regrets in purchasing this liberty. The same thing can be said about my Suzuki M109R. There have been quite a few issues with the 2nd gear on those bikes. I have owned 2 and put a total of nearly 60k miles on them with no problems. When I get back onto another 2 wheeled bike, the 109 is still one of only 3 bikes that I will consider. I just know now that when purchasing, what to look for, and be darn sure what to pay considering the possible issues.

I've been a fan of Jeeps since the early seventies...
To-date, I have owned:
1945 MB
1948 Pickup
1957 CJ-5
1974 Pickup
1979 Comanche
1987 Wrangler
1989 Wrangler
2002 Liberty
2004 Grand Cherokee
2006 Liberty... The current Cage.
2009 Liberty

NONE of them have been perfect, but they've ALL been fun!

Just saw that 1 in 7 vehicles on the US roads is impacted by the latest airbag recall. Feel fortunate that your Jeep is not one of the systems that when deployed send shards of steel into your face and chest. I'm seriously thinking about disconnecting the bags on my daughters Honda.
On another recall story, 6 months ago I got one for my truck which stated in part that total loss of control of the vehicle can occur if the recall part should fail. And by the way, the part is not available. They will let me know when the part becomes available, 6 months later I'm still waiting.

Sure they do. In fact I hear Chrysler, along with John Deere, is trying to get legislation passed stating only Chrysler can do maintenance on their vehicles. Seems they are the only ones that can do it right. Same with John Deere. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack: Correct me if I am wrong about this.

It's a JEEP Thing...

Call the NTSB and file a complain. When my 05 Liberty had a recall for suspension problems I got jerked around by 2 dealers. A call to NTSB got quick results. Sold it shortly after.

Hi Bob,

Re: I just tried searching the internet for information about this, and found nothing...

And if you do not find an Easter egg, is it still Easter?

This is nothing new; BMW tried to keep all maintenance procedures from anyone but their dealers. It took an act of Congress to get that stuff stopped.

Why do you think as to why BRP will not give discounts to independent motorcycle shops on Spyder parts?

It's all about having more control over you/your toys.

Just my $0.02,

Jerry Baumchen
