There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. 2008 se5 stuck in 3rd gear!

I just started riding a 2008 se5 that I got from my uncle. I love it but all of a sudden it is stuck in 3rd gear. Turned the bike of and restarted multiple times and it still won't go to nuetral. I have done some research and looks like maybe the shift angle sensor. I am new to the Spyder and would feel more comfortable if some folks with more experience had any ideas before I start working on it. Thanks!

Check to see if the shift linkage came apart.

If you can start it, then it must be in neutral or you have a problem. Did it get stuck in 3rd gear and didn't go into 4th when you tried to shift? If so, you may be trying to shift with the RPMs being too low. Shift at 4-5000 RPMs after 2nd gear.

will the spyder move after you start it, without trying to put it in gear?

I have checked all the parts under the bike and everything is together. It will crank and is in 3rd when it starts up. I can get it going and try to shift up or down at any rpm and nothing happens, it won't even downshift itself like it normally does. I guess I am going to have to break down and go to the dealer!

I agree if the linkage has not come apart it's time to see the dealer. By the way you can shift it manually with a wrench in the tool kit, if you need to get it back to first gear to move it around.

Did anything else happen prior to this event? Any suspicious noises or maybe a thumping on your left foot peg? I have had a problem with my shifting arm coming off the splined shaft from the transmission. When this happens the transmission remains in the last gear I happen to be in. But I can still start the engine even after the problem arises. There were no error codes either.

No noises or anything. I was just downshifting to make a turn and when it got to 3rd gear it never changed again. Then a week later I cranked it and it went down to 2nd gear and got stuck. I will check all the parts again.

Now that it has shifted from 3rd to 2nd we can rule out the shift linkage coming apart. The linkage does not reattach itself and then fall apart again. Can you shift the transmission with a wrench? The procedure is on page 102 of the owners manual.

Shift Angle Sensor! I took it off and cleaned where it connects and it is working fine now. I went ahead and ordered a new one so I won't have to worry about it anymore. Thanks for all the help!

Sounds like you can find your way around mechanical things... which is good. Since that appears to be the case, you should probably "brush-up" on a few things on the Spyder and do some basic inspection and maintenance... just to make sure your Spyder doesn't provide you more surprises.

it's good to be handy!

thank you

for that information, I'll have it checked out next time it happens
