Air Horns

Not sure what the purpose of stock horns are on bikes. They sound like a ruptured duck. Anyone have air horns installed that can provide advice on installing them?:helpsmilie:

My horn is definitely useless with my exhaust. Plus when going down the interstate, ya definitely cant hear it.:gaah::helpsmilie:

Air Horn

I want people to notice me especially when they are texting or chatting on their cell phones. I was interested in mounting this (see link) air horn on or in the Spyder but haven't done so, yet. Maybe someday.

I hope somebody mounts this horn and posts their experiences.

Ear Cannon Air Horn #3837

This is a full-power railroad locomotive/ocean liner type compressed air horn squeezed into a bike-mountable package. Totally overkill, until you need to wake up some lethal driver. It’s got both the high and low ear-splitting tones of the individually sold Fiamm Freeway Blaster Horns, plus a little more oomph. The 139dB high and low tone blasters combine via air induction to cut through the din and make the most distracted of drivers drop their cell phones and pay attention. Installs easily on all bikes with a 4.5"×3"×4.5" space for mounting. The loudest motorcycle horn available. If Ethel Merman, Sam Kinison and John Philip Sousa ever had a band, and played through a wall-of-sound amp rack, it would sound like this. 12V. 1 lb

I ordered it today I will let you know how it turns out.

On a Honda, I got tired of the little tinny horn and dropped into the auto supply, picked up a low tone car horn. No problems with cagers hearing me after that. Will this low tech idea work on Spyder?

I called Assured Automotive and asked about the street legal issue of the Ear Cannon. They said that it is legal "in most states" but to check to be certain. I can find no prohibition in WV. In fact, there are several postings on 2-wheeler sites that discuss installing air horns. If I ever have to use it to prevent an accident, if it IS illegal, I'll gladly pay the fine to prevent the accident

Sooooo...I ordered it.

I got the air horn for my bike and the wifes:spyder2: at www.twistedthorttle.com. They also sell a plug and play wire harness for the stebel air horn. Easy install and as shown above in other posts, easy places to mount. I put hers in place of the factory horn. Not sure that is proper install since its on its side. But it works.

Air Horn

 looking forward to seeing where you mount that Ear Cannon.

Well I put the Ear Cannon right behind the nose in the front.

I made a little metal stainless steel bracket to go crossed the
two metal channel that runs from top to bottom and put it there.

It was a tight fit but is completely out of the way and protected.

It's really hard to explain what it sounds like, cross between a train horn
and a steam whistle but I really like the noise it generates and completely
gets your attention and isn't that what a horn is supposed to do.

I did hook up a separate horn switch and ran the hot directly to the battery with
a separate 20 amp fuse.

I purchased the horn wiring kit but was completely disappointed with what you get
the only thing that I used was the fuse holder the wires were too short to do anything.

I kept the factory horn and switch I believe now that I'm going to rewire to the factory
switch because really you don't need two and when you put them together the sound
makes it sort of distorted.

I think it was a good buy for the price.

I would highly recommend that you consider hooking up the horn to run through a relay, instead of through a switch or the horn button. If the horn shorts or sticks, you will run down your battery quickly, and could start a fire, even if your wire gauge will handle 20 amps. Best to leave horns dead, and trigger them remotely, intead of running a hot wire directly to them.

Scotty,
I also highly recommend a relay it comes with a relay when you buy the horn. What I was going to do was just change the relay control
to the factory button which I have done instead of the extra button that I put on. No sense really having two horn buttons anyway.
I just left the factory horn as it was and used their control warring to the factory button for the new air horn.

I also wire directly to the battery the 20amp fuse because of the amount of draw is pretty considerable and I did not want to tax any other
auxiliary fuse panel with that much load. I have been very pleased it definitely gets the attention that is sometimes necessary when others
cannot see you.

I do have a question though or maybe somebody else can answer this has anybody tried or even if it's possible to push crank a dead
Spyder? With the Corbin bags and the side panel that has to be removed it could be pretty difficult to get a jump if for whatever reason
you wind up with a dead battery in the middle of nowhere.

U think the spyder has a weak horn? it is waay louder than any motorcycle i have ever had....they all sounded like the road runner..beep beep:D

Never tried it but I doubt it. Most modern bikes with processor-controlled engines cannot generate enough juice on a push to make everything work. It was the same on my ST1300, VTX1800 and the GL1800.

Saw that done this weekend. Spyder SM5 solenoid just gave out. Two of use pushed while the rider got set for the drop-clutch maneuver. Worked like a charm!

But it wasn't a dead battery... that was the topic of Nexus' question.
