There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. average clutch life on sm5?

Hard question to answer. Under normal operation and with no mechanical issues with things like the slave cylinder or clutch assist valve, it should last 100,000 miles or more. Under operation with a lot of slipping, especially with dead stops on hills. or if raced or otherwise abused, it could last only a few thousand. Choosing the wrong oil could do it in a few hundred. Are you having problems?

what's the average clutch life that one can expect to get on an sm5? :dontknow:

I just had my clutch replaced and I have 20, 000 miles on my RS. I always used BRP oil and had it changed regularly by my dealer. The service manager said that my clutch may have been slipping for awhile before I really started noticing the clutch slipping. Could have been how it was put together at the factory. But really it all depends on how hard you ride too...

No idea about what the average would be, but I have 93,125 miles on my Spyder and no problems at all.:yes: Have hauled a trailer over the last 3 years, about 16,000 miles also!

The clutch on my 2010 RT went at about 12,000 miles.
I called BRP and said No Way, I don't do burnouts etc.
They said, it's a big bike and that can be expected.
I told them I was still on the original brakes. You mean to tell me that the brakes last longer than the clutch ?
Net, net, I had a new clutch put in, and BRP picked up the tab.
I'm at about 14,000 on teh second clutch and it's still going strong with no signs of wear.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Varies..!!

but then it all comes down to the oils, additives, maintenance, and ryding style. I only have 13,400 miles but all is fine and I ryde hard and double up. Some extra hot weather and ryde with others with over 60,000 miles with no problem...hope your question is just curiousity...

Nice save with the BRAKES reply ......    ....Mike :agree:

I had 23,500 miles on my 2008 SM5. No problems whatsoever--that unit is still running and was told it has almost 40K on it.

at spyderquest we were in stop and go traffic for an hour and a half trying to get to the balloon festival. long and short of it, it didn't feel right the next day. not really slipping but short on the "catch and go" on the clutch. took it in to rustys today and had them change the clutch oil. real dark look to the old oil. seems to be fine today. ran it about 100 miles or so!

..You do realize that here is no separate " CLUTCH " oil......How long ago did you change your ENGINE OIL ? ? ?.....Mike

interesting

I think he means the clutch fluid on an SM. The hydraulic fluid is a separate system.

OK Scotty now I'm confused ,........How often do you change the clutch fluid .......and where is the Hydraulic fluid ....for an 08 GS and 11 RSS ? Mike

The clutch fluid, which is DOT 4 brake fluid (a type of hydraulic fluid) is to be inspected every 6,000 miles (or every year) and replaced every 12,000 miles (or every two years) according to the maintenance schedule. For many Spyders this is not enough. The fluid may be black and sludge filled in 3,000 miles, especially if the slave cylinder o-rings are deteriorating. The fluid is contained in the clutch master cylinder, piping, and the slave cylinder. It is accessible through the top of the master cylinder on the left handlebar, and is bled through the bleeder on the clutch cover on the right side of the engine. Here endeth the lesson. :D

Scotty, does this only apply to the GS/RS models ? ? ?......Mike .....Thanks again

This applies to all SM5's.
my rss has almost 12,000 miles and is a year and a half old. had the engine oil changed every 4000 miles. didn't realize the hydrolic fluid in the clutch system had to be checked so frequently. i'm bad!!:roflblack: every time I get an oil change i'll check the clutch fluid!!!
