Battery charge

So here is an odd question... I run my bike every day driving it to and from work, and would assume that would be sufficient to charge the battery, but it looks not to be enough.

The "lack of sufficient charge" is represented in the display console. Go through the normal starting process (key, wait..mode select) depress break pedal, after bike starts display gets muli vertical color bands and returns to select mode screen again, a quick press and screen show correctly ( rpm/speedometer). The reason I believe this is battery related is my dealership said charge was down on last service even after driving 50 miles to their location.

Is there a recommend time/distance to daily drive to ensure it remains charged or do I just need to trickle charge it nightly ?

Most of us put it on a battery maintainer when not riding it. The 2014 and up triple has an alternator but the 998 engine has an older stator system which needs higher rpm to charge the battery. The sweet spot is around 5,000 RPM. You could check the connections to make sure they are clean and tight. A battery maintainer like the Deltron Battery Tender Junior works well and keeps the battery up to full charge. How far do you commute?

connections???

As I'm sure you know electrical connections cause all kinds of grief. Check both terminals on the battery. Also is the charging voltage high enough? And the RPMs high enough ( about 4,000 on the V twin ).

I have a 2014 RT-S and had to have the battery replaced under warrenty. The wonderful dealer here put in a cheap , no-name battery upon assembly. It failed after 9 months and I demanded a Yasua OEM style. Got it and all is well.

Good luck,
Kaos

BATTERY

..That depends, the 998 series engines are on a magneto system which in our case means .....it doesn't begin to charge the Battery unless you are 4000 RPM's or more....So if you stay pretty much between 3500 and 4200 RPM's you won't be putting much of a charge back into the battery.....Most people who have the 998 engine keep the Spyder's on a " BATTERY MAINTAINER " when they aren't riding........a maintainer is not a charger.......you can get a Schumacher for about $25.00 @ Walmart ......and as stated by " kaos " check the terminal bolts....if they are loose get some " STAR WASHERS " and put them on then tighten bolts .....they will never get loose by themselves ........Mike

You can also get a Extreme or similar 5 stage charger for less the $100 & charge 1 day once a month. its what i do.

What gear and RPM range are you running the engine during the commute? Are keeping it revved up around 4000 plus, or less?

I keep a trickle charger on my 2014 RTL after each ride. Every time I come in from riding (unless I'm on a long trip from home) I plug in the charger for the battery and for my Dongle for my Bluetooth to keep them both charged. I do this on my lawn tractor also and have found that the batteries last longer. When I had my Harley, I did the same thing and only replaced the battery once during the time I owned it and that was 6 years. I had just changed the battery when I sold it so the original battery lasted about 6 years. I highly recommend keeping a trickle charger on the bike and any other item that uses battery starting. I read somewhere (can't remember where) a while back if a battery is allowed to discharge over and over that lead will flake off the plates and short out the bar at the bottom that connects the plates from the negative to positve terminals.

I think that is the problem my commute to work is only 6 miles one way so a total of 12 miles round trip and its in stop and go traffic so I don't believe I get to the 4000 rpm on a consistent basis to allow it to charge. Occasionally I deviate from my standard 6 miles and maybe drive an additional 12 miles but still that is in stop and go traffic. Believe I will have to put on a charger or should it be a trickle charge. Guess I'll be heading to Walmart or perhaps Amazon later on today to get one.... thanks for the help.

So here's the next part of the quandary where is the battery located on the 2014 is it in the front access panel in the funk. Or is it in the side panel on the left side of the bike?

It's in the Frunk, so are the two rubber grommets so you can run the cables up and out from battery without removing the access panel? Concerned if I run leads water would be able to get into battery, or do I just make a hole and pull the cables through middle of grommets?

Battery Maintainers...
If you've got a 998: get one, and use it regularly!
If there's a Triple in your Life: it's just not as critical; but it's still not a bad idea!

As an experiment; I parked my bike last November, and didn't touch it for over a Month.
When I hooked up my Battery Tender Junior; it showed "yellow" on the light for less than 20 minutes, and then popped over to "Green".

My old 998 would show "Yellow for twice as long; EVERY time I plugged it in. (Even daily!)

:agree:, and I am not a very agreeable person.

So a battery tender plus or a bettery tender jr.? One (first one) :The Battery Tender® Plus is a 1.25 amp battery charger designed to fully charge a battery and maintain it at proper storage voltage without the damaging effects caused by trickle chargers

Vs second one:
The Battery Tender® Junior is much more than a trickle charger. It has a brain. It's lightweight, compact, and fully automatic; very easy to use, especially in small spaces. It will keep your battery fully charged so that it is ready

And hooking up through the two rubber grommets in the Frunk is recommend?

Either one will do for what your trying to do.

Do not put it n the trunk. It's just a very common bad idea to let water get in the trunk. Connect the pigtail to the jumper posts. Real easy install. Fully accessible no matter how full the trunk is.
